Hero elite skills - how to get ...
How do we get hero elite skills for professions other than our character's profession/secondary profession?
i.e. I am a warrior/monk - how do I get elites for necros, elementalists, etc.?

either make your secondary one the correct class....or....make a new character. your heros share whatever pve skills you have unlocked on your account. its one of the reasons people go for UAS (unlocked all skills) for each class. that gives that character the best options for builds. and gives your heros more skills to choose from.

you can do a little pvp and unlock them with balthazar points. the unlock is account wide so if you unlock it in any way its unlocked accross the account

Are there any down sides to temporarily changing my secondary profession for the purpose of capping a couple of elite skills? I am hoping to "smoothly" go back to Monk as my secondary profession after I have the skills capped for my Heros.

You can change your secondary profession to anything that you've unlocked when you're in town.

There used to be a downside way back when only chapter 1 was out. You had to do quests to unlock each seconday profession after you ascended (in crystal desert) and every time you wanted to change your secondary, you had to map to the relevant outpost in the desert and click on the NPC to change it. And you had to do it every time (obviously no repeating of quest but trying to remember where the mesmer secondary guy was etc) !!!
Then we had factions, where all you had to do was to get to Senji's corner, choose profession and pay 500 gold. When you wanted to change back, follow the same route but without the gold.
With the skill templates and the rest of the changes, once you change your secondary by either of the routes above.......you can revert by using your skills menu drop downs or just loading the right template. Life is easy now. I generally unlock the secondaries in one go based on what I expect to use and then alternate between them as need be e.g. For Warrior, /Mo /Me /Ele /A /P /Rit etc.

I just highlighted the downside to changing 2ndaries. 500 gp each time you wish to change. Eventually you will pay 1k for each skill/signet of capture. It becomes quite pricy after a while.
Else, no other draw back.

500 gp for each profession though (10 professions - 2 = 8 x 500 gp = 4k). If you do the profession quests in Crystal Desert, you get to reduce the cost by 2k.
Get your free skills with each change, do some profession only quests in Tyria, get some sunspear points in Elona and you save a bit of money for skills.
It became very pricey for me with getting all the skills for just 2 professions.

Even if you do the Prophecies secondary profession quests, you should pay to unlock the skills from the core changer anyways. He has one or two skills that are not available from the Prophecies skill quests; if you cap elite skills until it costs one platinum to learn a new skill, you save yourself 500 gold and a skill point when you pay the core changer for a profession change.

Well, I think it's worth the cost. If you have NF, go to Command Post. That's pretty easy to remember as it's a major hub. There's a profession changer right outside and also a skill trainer as a neighbor. I'd buy all the secondary professions. Buy one for $500g, you get a few normal skills, select something else and buy another profession. Then you just select which secondary you want through the drop down menu whenever you are in town. This makes it easy to cap elites later.
Not sure if you are interested in going for skill title, but I think this helps a lot as you'll often find some bosses near portals to towns. Usually I'll venture out, come across some boss really close to town, fight it once to see what elite it's got and then port back to town, change secondary and go back out and cap it.
Even if you mainly play as a W or R or whatever, I think it's always a good thing to cap whatever you run across so you can use different builds with your heroes. Sure, you'll probably stick to the same standard builds of a Searing Flames Ele or Minion Master Nec, but some situations in missions just require some skill and it's really nice to have already capped it somewhere along the line instead of having to take additional time to track it down when you really want to be doing something else.
I don't PvP much, but I think that's a good way to get a lot of the normal skills (personally, I like killing bosses).
Note, I have saved enough money in the bank to get some elite armor in the future, but I find that buying skill caps and purchasing normal skills is my biggest gold sink. I'm trying to finish Factions and NF at the same time and there's always something for me to cap when I hit an area. Usually (particularly in Factions) there's more bosses I need to cap then I actually have money on hand to buy the sigs.
Anyways that's what's fun about this game for me. I think once I finish Factions and NF I'm going to try to cap all the elites I've missed for all the professions one at a time and see if I can get that done by the time GWEN comes out.
The downside I've found about changing professions so often is that you constantly seem to be changing your skill bar and sometimes your attributes. Make use of the template codes to save you some time and change your secondary often.

I'm trying to get as much skills as possible just to be sure I'll have them when I need them, but as Paragon it basically means I have to go explore at least two more times than if I were core/faction class in NF. Anyway, I find it enjoyable and good way to unlock w/o getting ovewhelmed with the cap sig costs. I also found it's good way to gather some equipment for my heroes. May be I just like them too much. I have to think not only for my own but for for 3 more skill bars. I'm lovin' it.

Or buy the PvP editions and add it to your PvE account. The PvP editions unlock all normal skills for you, and all normal and Elites for your heroes. It's the quickest and easiest way if you're willing to part with some cash.
You still need to quest'n'cap if you want to use an Elite on your skillbar but all normal skills are accessible via the Skill trainers.

Heroes have access to all skills unlocked on your account. You can unlock elites for them by either capturing them in PvE or unlocking them with Balthazar faction. Only one PvE character needs to capture skills to unlock them accout wide and the core secondaries are available from Prohecies for free. You can gain Balthazar faction through some introductory fights against NPC's that yield up to 2K per day in about 10 minutes (or less). Each elite is 3K, normal skills 1K. This is the method I use to gain normal skills for my heroes. I prefer to cap the elites.
