Been out of the loop!
I just picked this game up after, what, maybe a year of downtime. I was expecting a lot of change, but it seems in that small time I was gone, the economy has become total TRASH. Everything is losing it's value, superior runes are selling for 200-300g at the traders, when before (some of them) retailed in excess of thousands of gold (mostly thinking of vigor, absorption). And with the introduction of the new classes and all the other changes brought about by the two expansions I was not around for, I feel distanced from the whole game.
Basically need some advice on the best possible way I could start out in this newer era of Guild Wars. I want advice on farming (I am currently running a W/Mo, while I realize other professions are better, make due and tell me what build I could pursue), advice on the economy (how much general materials sell for like wood, iron ingots, vellum, parchment, etc), and anything else I should know but probably don't.

If you haven't played any of the new Elona areas, your farming will be reduced to the same old Tyrian spots...that and ecto/shard farming.

Back in the day everything was about D.Griffins and UW... now I see people are expanding to farm the entire Crystal Desert and other whole parts of the map with a single setup which was generally new to me. I've been experimenting with Hydra farming, but I can't find a reliable team to cap Defy Pain, nor can I at the moment afford Droks armor (which I see has been reduced to 1000g in price). I'm sitting on a set of Infused pre-Searing armor, save for a single piece being a Gladiator's Hauberk (Droks). Though I am surprised how fast I made it to THK on my second real character (i.e. made it passed level 10 before I got bored and deleted).

well, the world of gw has changed. a lot. i can only assume you have figured out about Hard Mode? it's all over the forums. lon story short, in hard mode drops are better and monsters are (suprise!) harder to kill. have you beaten prophecies yet? on your main char? because as a W/Mo, i know there is a solid farming build using retribution and holy wrath (i know there's a lot of factions skills in the build, but you can create variations. a lot of the old builds still work in Normal Mode, but farming in Normal mode is generally crap. i assume you know about the AoE nerf? (point is, balthazar's aura and symbol of wrath don't work anymore, as the monsters run away from the damage.) as an above poster said, your farming wil be reduced to prophecies and FoW/UW, wich i recommend. however, if i read correctly, you have Pre searing armor on your w/mo? that's the first thing you have to remedy, pre armor will absolutely not cut it in solo farmng, hard mode or any serious group. check out the solo farming sticky for some solo builds, there have to be some with prophecies only skills. by the way, if you really want to farm effectively, make a 55 character (ele, necro, monk.) i have a 55 necro, and i farm nearly everything with him, you name it. i know you want stuff for W/Mo, but i'm jut not sure how effectively you can farm in Hard Mode with a Prophecies only W/Mo.

I'm only rocking the pre-Searing armor because I can't afford anything else at the moment. I was planning to sell my random black dye drop for 5k and buy full Droks when I got there, but I eventually used it to pay for a Thirsty River run as I was overly eager to ascend.
As well, back in the day I used to farm (heavily) Mountain Trolls outside of Rankor and D.Griffins. Not for profit exactly, just more along the lines for fun. I used the typical Cyclone Axe + Vigorous Spirit + Live Vicariously build for both, but with the implementation of Scarabs and other what-have-yous in Prophet's Path, it isn't exactly the most viable build to carry out farming on (note that I haven't had a chance to farm Trolls yet).
I basically stuck with the W/Mo because it was what I was most familiar with. I logged over 200 hours and had a full 15k Glad setup on my last (before I quit) with ~75 plat in storage, but when I quit I gave that all away.
Prior to my current play-through, my main money-making scheme was to buy bulk amounts of wood, craft it into parchment, and sell the parchment for 100g a piece as it only cost 70g to make. Through this I managed to (rather quickly) acquire my 15k, not at all through farming (which again is why I did it more for fun). But the economy seems to be on a slope. Now parchment only sells for 75g a piece, and if I went and spent 14,000g on a full batch (which would make 200 parchment), I'd only make 15,000g reselling it, which is a meager profit and far too time consuming (people don't buy bulk parchment much anymore).
I'm in a pretty tight situation right now. My prior money-making scheme has been debunked, my current W/Mo is too weak to carry out any real sort of farming run, and I don't have the funds to buy armor, or armor-enough to support myself while farming to make the money to buy the better armor, yet, I still managed my way to THK.
I was contemplating running again, as I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed running people across Tyria, even if it was just for tips. Again, however, I'm still sitting on pre-Searing armor which won't hold up well in some of the tight situations running can get you into. For instance, I can't make it through the Cursed Lands on a ToA run now, whereas then, with full AL, it seemed relatively easy. And I'm not about to skimp on condition and hex removal and health restoration to buff my AL when I only have 8 skills slots, which depending on the run, have to be filled very wisely.
As well, I've checked numerous farming builds and all are asking for few things I just don't have yet. Whether it be skills, minimum armor, runes, weaponry, or even locations. I was intent on Hydra farming because it looks semi-profitable, I have almost every skill required, save for Defy Pain as I mentioned earlier (which I am STILL trying to cap), and best of all, seeing as it mainly revolves around Riposte and Deadly Riposte, I don't have to seek out a weapon worth 25k just to slay the damnable beasts.
Curiously enough, I'm running a tank build right now which actually seems to fare extraordinarily well given my poor setup. I have a lot of AL and blocking buffs, and given the monk/healer on my team isn't a dope, I can survive for a copious amount of time.

idea for a farm for ya, quick and easy in Hard Mode.
one last idea before i sleep: you could try farming the minotaurs outside ice tooth cave in Hard Mode: they're not difficult to kill with a glad's defense riposte build i would think, and the hih blocking chance of glad's defence and presumably, bonetti's defense means you could even do it in pre armor, untl you have enough for droks armor. also, you can farm scoundrel's rise in normal mode with a high damage sword/axe war, dye drop rates are through the roof there.
that's all i got for today, let's see what i ca think of come tomorrow, when my brain is less addled.

A few months ago I was in the same pickle as you, except I didn't give all my stuff away and quit for a while, rather I just deleted all my characters and started over to feel clean again. As I did start over, I found a few good places to farm, decent money, and they weren't hard places.
NORMAL MODE: Ice Tooth Minotaurs... Thats right, normal mode.
If your still in pre armor, this is a good way to get the money for your droks, do a few of these runs and you'll have a few thousand gold. I think it took me about 45 minutes to get 2k off those guys. Thats a considerable amount of money for lvl 10's.
For farming them, your Vigorous Spirit, and Live Vicariously/Cyclone Axe build would work just fine, they dont do much damage in the first place. Fill in the rest of the build with some defensive buffs such as Watch Yourself, Dolyak Signet, and Bonnetti's Defense. WY and BD are easily spammable if your using Cyclone Axe.
________________________________________
Mergoyle Wavebreakers outside of Gates of Kryta.
Another farming spot that is also good for low lvlin'.
It has about the same money making speed as the minos, but you'll get more purples as I've come to find out. Just group the Mergoyles and use some point blank area of effect skills.

I actually was in the same sort of predicament.
I quit for 2 months, then decided to trade my "clean" GW account for some Diablo II + expansion CD keys. I cleared everything off of the account, logged out, disabled auto-login, tried to log in again, and for whatever reason, I could not for the life of me remember what my log-in name was again. I know it was an e-mail address and I tried every one I could think of, to no avail. So in theory, everything was deleted and this was a clean start, being that I also bought an entirely new copy of Guild Wars once again. (Mind you, I plan on getting Nightfall this Thursday.)

Unfortunately, armour buffs will no longer stack. Hence either WY or DS may basically be a wasted skill slot, unless you skill both Tactics and Strength low enough to not exceed the +25 armour cap for both skills combined.

It takes just as long to collect the collectables as it does to collect the gold.
Anyways, I used Electric Friend's minotaur farming method and it worked out rather well. I was getting 600-700g per run (~10 minutes) and managed to buy the last four pieces and crafting materials. So thanks for that

I don't know how to get quotes going on this yet, but I didn't know that the armor buffs did not stack. When did they change it?

June 15th, balance update. You will find the armour cap under the header "Miscellaneous".
ps:
For quoting, just press the little "Quote" button at the lower right of the post you wish to quote. Then edit its text to keep just what you need.

Welcome back to Guild Wars. This is perhaps not the best time to come back, as Guild Wars is in an awkward stage at the moment. I like to think of it as the "puberty" stage of Guild Wars. The economy is definently not what it used to be, and you used to shit your pants when you get a rare skinned drop, then sell it. Now it's not so random, you can farm rare skinned weapons now, rather than relying on trade (Hard Mode). Bots now conquer the Underworld, making ectoplasm at a lower price. The only ones that are succesful in the Guild Wars world are the rich and retired Snowbirds, who have done their share back in the day. Now they sit on their asses admiring their 500 ectoplasm in storage. I feel bad for the beginners, as lots of things in Guild Wars are pretty screwed up at the moment. Perhaps another change will happen in EotN, or GW 2? We do not know.

I'm just getting back into Guild Wars too. I really wanted to get back into farming especially when I heard about HM. I never made much money in the early days. It seems the GW economy has always been messed up.
So what should a beginner or someone who does have much money do, wait for GW2?

Something else on my mind...
When I used to play before, storage only consisted of a window with 20 item slots and bank, which made it very difficult to hold onto all the goodies you found. Now, however, there are two windows with 20 item slots (ftw) as well as a material-specific window. I've been making the most out of it but I want to know if there's any sort of cap for how much you can have of something?

Since I'll finally be able to play GW on something other than a satellite again, I'll be able to come back to this game as well. I was a huge farmer for a while, so I know I still probably have about 100k saved up, but I'm a bit intrigued with Hard Mode, and the PVE skills.
Living without a cable internet connection (and wanting to live closer to campus) is enough to make me want to move away, I suppose any reason to get away from one's parents is a good one.

You've definately returned at a bad time; focus on one character and hopefully GW:EN/GW2 will save this game from death. Also, you might want to try solo the Smite Crawlers (Glad's Def is fine) in UW with your warrior. It'll take practice but the ectos (Remember 4k per ecto is still good money for someone with nothing) will make up for it. Give me a shout if you need any help.

Peace
