Read OP and instantly thought this, started laughing when I read your post because you worded it much better than what I was thinking.
Ranger is generally really weak relative to other classes at every aspect of the game (unless you make a pre-searing char, in which case I think they are even and maybe even ahead). Not wanting to use GWPvX is great and all, but you may still want to browse there and see what works together and what doesn't as a general guideline to creating your own custom build. Simply throwing two random classes together for the hell of it normally won't work, and R/Me is probably one of the worst I can think of (maybe E/W? I guess then you would at least have SY!). If you want to do some crazy build physical hybrid build I would go with A or D as a primary, simply because they are the only classes that could keep up with the energy demand that most caster skills put on a character - they will have 25 base energy with 4pip regen. With any hybrid, though, I would just go ahead and take a caster primary for the pool/regen and then go from there.
So yeah, there's a reason why GWPvX is around - not only for just giving you cookie cutter builds, but also for testing of what has worked and hasn't worked in the past, which makes the trial and error of custom build making a lot easier.
Oh, and as a sidenote, I would just go with a class primary that can steamroll content without a secondary or that suits any other secondary well (first thing to come to mind is Assassin, or Rit but they get extremely boring imo). That way when the novel idea of being a unique snowflake wears off, you aren't stuck with some weak class, and can continue playing with strong builds.
Sorry for the (what seems to me as I type this) huge post, just woke up and can't control my fingers.
