For a Ranger... I think the most handy in PvE is Barrage. It is low cost energy and anyone can run it. Barrage with a pet is awesome for new players. Give you that added meat up front to continue to Barrage. Ranger have some of the best Elites in the game. I would have you choose Barrage, though.

Well, the best for ranger available in Factions are easily [wiki]Broadhead Arrow[/wiki], [wiki]Barrage[/wiki], [wiki]Enraged Lunge[/wiki], [wiki]Glass Arrows[/wiki], [wiki]Heal as One[/wiki] and [wiki]Famine[/wiki].
I'd say that for factions, Barrage, Glass Arrows and Broadhead are the most useful for storyline and such, Famine is more of a farming tool (at least I haven't heard of any other awesome applications) and the beastmastery stuff is good for arenas/AB as well as just for fun PVE. There's also actually some solo farming builds somewhere from way back when using pure beastmastery.

Either way, if you have just Nightfall, go Bathazaar and cap unlock Barrage and get a tome. IMHO Barrage is the most dependable Elite a Ranger can have when moving through storyline and mission. I agree that it sucks in PvP and it sux when farming.

[skill]Burning Arrow[/skill]
Pretty much the most versatile elite, it can be handy in almost every area except Destroyer mobs.
Barrage sucks, and it's definitely one of the least dependable elites, if not THE least dependable... [wiki]Volley[/wiki] + [skill=text]Splinter Weapon[/skill] and a more useful elite > Barrage anyday with the SW nerf, only 3 arrows will trigger SW so you don't need 7 arrows from Barrage.

i would have thought concentrating on one moster and killing it quickly may be better than spreading the "love"/damge on a number of creatures. So an elite that does more damge to one creature is better than barrage but which one is it?

well...it depends on how you look at it. see for me, i think its best to use barrage because i can "spread the love" as you put it as well as interrupt the hell out of the enemy if i choose. i suppose its a matter of preference.

also am i right in thinking that if i use poison on barrage than more creatures would get poisoned.
also which is better to use kindle and get 10+ or use poison for 7 secs? i could use both but i am then using energy.
thx

Barrage removes any preparation so you wont be able to spread it.

To be honest I think it depends entirley on the target. If your playing in an area with a lot of weak AL foes or low level enemies, then switch in Barrage. But if your against stronger, tougher baddies use a skill thats more dedicated towards taking down one enemy at a time (Burning Arrow and the likes)
As for my favourite, at the minute its probably [skill=text]Magebane Shot[/skill] Dont know why no one has said it yet

Magebane is less of a PVE awesome, and more a PVP awesome but it's a must have. It's also not so early in Nightfall as Burning arrow. For Nightfall, get Burning Arrow (first), Smoke Trap and Magebane are right next to each other in desolation and are both very good. Your last must have from NF in my opinion is Prepared Shot. One optional I'd also get but get with faction or whenever you want to use in PVP is Rampage as Pwn (one) as it's a thumper standard. Some will also argue Experts Dexterity, but meh up to you.

Barrage is an awesome elite, I will just say that more often than not I find that the extra arrows are wasted, because you generally don't find an area where you consistently have more than 3 enemies at a time clustered up perfectly for barrage.

Broadhead Arrow in Factions, Burning Arrow and Rampage as One in Nightfall.
I used to use Barrage because it was the only Elite I had. Boy, am I glad I started capping other skills. That isn't to say Barrage is without its usefulness; despite the recent nerf to Splinter Weapon, Splinter Barragers still dish out some crazy damage, especially if you're using a zealous bow for sustained output, or vampiric one for added damage.

Its great in PvE NM and just average in HM. Requires a decent amount of skill to use it efficently thought ^^ But one of the best interrupts in the game (in terms of energy and recharge)
