a weird R/Rit build that works...or does it?
1) point blank shot
2) zojun's shot
3) marksman's wager
4) lightning reflexes
5) whirling defense
6) mend body and soul
7) soothing memories
8) throw dirt
12 expertise, 11 marksmanship, 12 restoration magic
this build can tank multiple sins and warriors, and can dish out good (but not great) damage, especially to casters. marksman's wager means I can heal myself indefinitely. using this build often gets me hilarious responses like "just die already" and "holy **** ur a good ranger" (I know, that last one always cracks me up, considering how much i suck). just have to be careful not to shoot at sins with high blocks. So, on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the UN-suckiest, how is this build?

Reading into your post, it seems like you are using this in PvP. So if you want my honest assessment, it'd be a 2. This puts you about on the same level as a stance tank warrior with healing hands/mending/dolyak/healing breeze who also say that they can tank 5 warriors at once etc.
Why a 2 instead of a 1 you might ask?
The fact that you assigned points gives you an additional edge over those that don't no matter what the build is, so thus, a 2.

Actually I think that warrior has more damage output than the ranger.

To be fair mate its not that great ^^ the majority of the build is healing and there is very little damage output. The thing about the Ranger you have to realise is that your job IS'NT to tank. It's to hang at the back, throw out a few conditions, interupts and some DPS. If this is the style of play you prefer I would suggest starting a Warrior ^^
But for this build I would complety scrap the idea and start over. Try not to focus on keeping yourself alive, while its all well and good to bring a self heal such as [skill=text]Troll Unguent[/skill] this is a bit over the top. Let your monks take care of you and worry about interupting key spells.
As for the build that Syntoic posted, please do ignore lol if your after a good Ranger build try something along the lines of this...
[skill]Burning Arrow[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Natural Stride[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]
Use Burning Arrow and Apply Poisoin to spread major degen, try and spread it around a bit. Savage/Distracting to interupt spells, you shouldn have any trouble interupting anything more than a 1 second cast time. Natural Stride for when things dont go your way and Troll Unguent to heal yourself ^^ Its always good practice to bring a Resurrection of some sort. I suppose if your Ritualist you could try bringing [skill=text]Flesh of my flesh[/skill] just be careful with it ^^
I left one space empty on that bar so you can mix it up a bit and add some variety. I would suggest something to improve the damage output of the overall build. Skills like (my fave) [skill=text]Keen Arrow[/skill], [skill=text]Dual Shot[/skill] or [skill=text]Forked Arrow[/skill]. You could always add more conditions in there also if you wish, maybe try [skill=text]Concussion Shot[/skill], [skill=text]Screaming Shot[/skill] or [skill=text]Pin Down[/skill].
If you dont have access to [skill=text]Burning Arrow[/skill] or you would rather use another elite skill, consider some of the following (all of which fit in well on this bar)...
[skill]Magebane Shot[/skill][skill]Broad Head Arrow[/skill][skill]Punishing Shot[/skill][skill]Crippling Shot[/skill][skill]Melandru's Shot[/skill][skill]Prepared Shot[/skill]
Hope any of this helps

nuts. you're right, Wakka. guess there's a reason why my interrupt ranger is more successful than this one. its the same build as you suggested except for Punishing Shot instead of Burning Arrow.
on the other hand, I got sick of joining random TA and RA teams with no monk and having my @** handed to me by sins in shadow form.
this R/Rit doesn't do great damage. my interrupter dies. my degen spreader also dies. what i need is a high damage ranger build with high survivability. is it not possible to have both? am I doomed to AB for pvp satisfaction?
or, like you said, get a warrior ^^
*shudder*

Ah right didnt realise it was for PvP ^^ Well I havent played GvG in a while but a Ranger ganker was commonly used throughout the top ranks...
[skill]Burning Arrow[/skill][skill]savage shot[/skill][skill]distracting shot[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Mending Touch[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill][skill]Natural Stride[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]
Marksmanship - 12 + 1 + 1
Expertise - 9+1
Wilderness - 9+1
It should do the trick, works very well in RA/TA, providing you know how to kite
What equipment are you using? Runes/Insignias?

Wakka is right about the role of a ranger.
For more specific criticism, the healing spells you use are not even used to their full potential:
[skill=text]Mend Body And Soul[/skill] - you get the full benefit when there are spirits around, and your build doesnt use even one spirit.
[skill=text]Soothing Memories[/skill] - you get the full benefit when you are holding an item, and your build doesnt have an item spell.

Don't go overboard on self-healing. If the main point of a build is just to heal yourself, how are you helping the team out?

This build is everlasting and immortal if you're good with it. Its also energy efficient because Expertise applies to everything.

Fix'd. The pathetic damage increase of that extra Marks (not even an extra Burning second) pales in comparison to being able to use skills freely with less energy concerns.
eep
wrong numbers/skills in my head
Yeeah, an extra burning second at 14 marks...
still not worth it.

Good catch Alex, I didn't notice that when I quoted it.
But yeah, besides that there's a break point at 14 Expertise where 10-energy skills cost 4. Its a good place to be.

Burning Arrow provides damage, Apply Poison your degeneration condition, the two interrupts your disruption, Mending Touch, Natural Stride and Troll Unguent your survivability.
It's the jack of all trades.
