Default Prepared Shot

Am I a terrible person for using Read the Wind/Prepared Shot to give me energy to use PvE-only spells? I like to use Ebon Battle Standard of Honor and Wisdom, and sometimes a Breath of the Great Dwarf/Great Dwarf Weapon, but on a ranger, it's hard to start a fight with basically 6-7 energy after casting those two wards. Suggestions would be appreciated.

I use Prepared Shot in my main PvE build so I can spam Prec. Shot and Power Shot. My thread is the "Conjure Flame + Kindle Arrows or Fiery Bowstring" one. Checking that out might help haha.

But to answer your question... you can do whatever you like in PvE, just as long as you're not bringing your party down with that build :P

Yeah, PvE only stuff is kinda bad for rangers. In fact, out of all the classes, I'd say the ranger and monk get the worst out of it. An ele benefits from a huge energy pool, a necro has energy management, a paragon gets energy from shouts, warriors/sins/dervishes get the nice adrenaline melee skills. Mesmers and ritualists don't get great benefits, but at least they have 4 energy regen compared to ranger's 3.

Expertiese is one of the greatest primary attribute there is. Overall, ranger prob has the best e-management system in the game behind nec and para. As long as you dont spam 10 energy skill like a mad man and have 11-12 pts in expertiese you shouldnt run into energy problems.

Energy recovery is what Prepared Shot is for, and if it does all you need you are fine.

You can get additional energy boost from a Paragon Hero, running with high points in Motivation whose bar includes Zealous Anthem, Aria of Zeal, and Energizing Finale. I run a R/E build, Air Magic, and with just 25 energy on my bar I can use Air Magic about every other shot and still have plenty of energy!

I agree that ANet should have given more thought to Rangers when they set the energy requirements, casting times, and recharge times for the Title Track skills. Most are useless to me.

Personally I LOVE this skill it can be used for many combos like Concussion shot spamming or dual penetrating attacks or a judges insight ranger...etc

I think Marksman's Wager is simply beautiful for energy management. Fire a couple arrows and have enough energy to do what you need to do. And if what you need to do is spam attack skills, even better.

we use Prep Shot to supply Great Drawfs () Weapon on our 2 melees (or just one and the ranger).

it's good for energy.

works on nearly no PvE spells i think, that's why Rangers get a disadvantage.

o ok.

don't ever use barrage for energy management...nor a zealous bow outside of certain builds.

well here's a build I run on my Ra Hero's (and have run myself with variations to include PvE only skills too) and it should help with your En management.

[skill]prepared shot[/skill]
Expert Focus: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Expert_Focus
[skill]concussion shot[/skill]
[skill]distracting shot[/skill]
[skill]savage shot[/skill]
[skill]Lightning Reflexes[/skill]
[skill]epidemic[/skill]
[skill]resurrection signet[/skill]

12 +1 +1 Expertise
12 + 1 Marksmanship

Experts Focus is great with prepared shot - you get bonus dmg and good en return and lets you spam concussion shot (bots actually use this buid quite effectively). You can dump the stance, epidemic and even an interupt to toss in some PvE skills. Just use prep everytime it's up and you'll do just fine with En

Hope this helps

It doesn't work on any that I'm aware of. Not even Black Powder Trap!

How much energy do you really need to spam 10 energy skills that really cost only 4-5? Overkill.

I have been using prep shot for better than 6 months now. I understand everything it does.

At 16 marksmanship prep shot gives 10e for every hit. At 12 expertise, prep shot is nearly free thanks to +3 regen and the expertise modification. I have shot prepared shot with 1 point of energy in a major firefight, and 3 shots later had nearly a full bar if not the full bar. In 24s, the last shot under RtW will fill your energy to the max, even while using concussion shot and at least 2 PvE only skills.

At 14 marksmanship, Prep Shot gives back 8e per shot. Though this initially seems a minor drop of overall effectiveness, it can prove a bother in situations where Concussing a boss and all the casters in the area would work to the teams advantage. However, once you get a handle on the limitations that -6e every 24s means to your energy pool, you'll be fine.

It's all a timing adjustment.

As for barrage+Zealous string...Prepared Shot pwns it for the mere fact that skill>spamming. Also, the use of preperations as well as maintaining the energy regen of the character adds to the pacing of a team setup. You don't need a mass mob to be great when the ranger is so great as an individual power player type character.
