Not counting the damage over time spells:
-You have skills from fire magic like mind burn, Rodgart's Invocation etc.
-Chaneling spells like Channeled strike and Sprit Rift which do like 140+ base lightning dmge, etc.
-Earth spells like Obsidian Flame that ignore armour, shockwave, aftershock, etc.
-even Water magic with Shatterstone doing 210 dmge and Vaporblade doing 143 dmge, plus no exhaustion...
though some may not be single spike spells, they can spike the whole friken group!
|
Rodgort's is good, probably better than air spells since burning ignores armor. But that's really only one good fire spell, the rest of fire spells really suck meh. With Lightning Hammer and Orb you can spam them back-to-back for a constant stream of damage.
Obsidian Flame - are you kidding? EXHAUSTION?!?! Shockwave/Aftershock/all that crap = melee range = PHAIL
Shatterstone is elite, of course it's better than nonelites...
Vapor Blade does 1/2 damage to enchanted foes you know.... therefore it's kinda crappy and unreliable
But the main reason, as said, is BLIND. Throwing out 90% chances to miss for 8 seconds every 4 seconds is too good to pass up on...

All the pros use Freezing Gust.
It's ever so much more flexible. Shatter + Gust can assist in spikes, Gust on its own can snare. Though... gods only know how long it's been since I last ran Shatterstone anywhere serious...
Vapor Blade is baed. Agreed.

Actually... I might try that in pve.

[skill]mind shock[/skill] is only good in TA for a quick spike not for longer battles such as gvg

Dunno bout you but i love air ele in AB matches. Air ele's may have lower dmg per skill but check the recharge rates on some of these skills. Just take a dual attunement ele with Lightning Hammer, Lightning Orb, and Lightning Strike with blinding flash and there you go. Or you can replace Lightning Orb with Enervating Charge if you want no Projectile skills. With 4 to 5 second recharge you can spam continuously without much worry for nrg while also keeping melee and ranged targets blinded. So i consider air ele's cheap but very fun.

good thing about air ele is the damage is high ( +extra 25% armor penetration)
another good thing about air ele is that its high damage skill energy cost is high, so you get healed a lot if you're under effect of aura of restoration. the high energy can be countered by using both elemental and air attunement. the healing amount is calculated based on the base energy cost, not after discount.
the long casting time of air magic can be countered by using staff with swift staff head, giving more chance of half casting time.
usually i have this setup if i play air ele..:
[skill]arcane Echo[/skill][skill]Lightning hammer[/skill][skill]Lightning orb[/skill][skill]elemental attunement[/skill][skill]air attunement[/skill][skill]aura of restoration[/skill]

the air spiker basic build. It works pretty good. I wonder how glyph of energy with chain lightning would work.

nice job getting off topic with whatever skill deals the most damage. Thats kinda amazing...
Air magic is good because of B-surge, like everyone said. To the OP, I don't know who told you that air magic was supposed to deal a whole bunch of damage but most of the time air eles are used to shut down the other teams melee and help on spikes by using skills like [skill]Lightning Orb[/skill][skill]Lightning Hammer[/skill][skill]Lightning Bolt[/skill] People used to run some air ele spikes when the game first came out. Then people started using M/Es to do fast cast air spikes. Those days are long gone however. A lot of the air skills are weaker now that factions and nightfall have come out, not because they have been nerfed necesarily, but because other skills have been created that are better, like channeling.

this is guru things go off topic a good bit here no matter what the topic is. *looks to the dervish forum for some fine examples* Air is more of a utility thing but it can do good spikes.

can someone tell me when Guru is going to update their game skills with the PVE only skills and GWEN skills added in?
sorry about the off topic but interesting idea spread low armor around while spiking.

I originally had glyph of lesser energy, but glyph of swiftness gets far more use. I'm actually wondering if a mesmer could do it better with fastcasting -only with glyph of lesser energy instead of glyph of swiftness for energy management.

[skill]Gale[/skill].
[skill]Blinding Surge[/skill] is only good if you aren't playing against a Walking Tree or your opponent doesn't have [skill]Diversion[/skill] or [skill]Distracting Shot[/skill].
To reiterate a point I made in another thread, dual attunements are baed.

I would go and read BHavvs thread and I use Air mostly and prefer it over say fire unless I need the AoE damage.
Here it is.http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10200208

While your points in that thread were valid as I said in that thread. Use ele attune if you don't have NF.

<_< i never hear anyone complain about earth magic, its the one that needs a buff. highest energy costing spells without any good e-management other than earth atonement and elemental atonement.
