From the wiki article on critical hits:

Whenever a critical hit with a weapon occurs, the damage done is equal to the maximum damage of the weapon multiplied by approximately √2(1.41 approx), the equivalent of striking for maximum damage with a weapon attribute 4 higher than actually possessed or striking a foe with a -20 armor penalty.

Basically, a critical hit does 1.4 times the max damage of your weapon (so at 12 DM, you'd get 17*1.4=23.8, which I'm pretty sure would round up). You could do the same damage if you hit for the maximum damage with 4 more points in the weapon attribute (so a critical hit at 8 Mastery would be the same as a max damage hit at 12 mastery), or if the foe had 20 less armor (if someone had 40 armor instead of 60).

You should use 4 decimal places (1.4142), which would end up with a damage of 24.0416, rounded down to 24 damage @ 12 Dagger Mastery.

This critical hit bonus is the effect of increasing your damage rating by 20. Increasing your damage rating is the same as reducing your foes armor by the same amount.

Put simply, imagine whenever you critical hit, the opponent has 20 less armor than normal, and you do the maximum damage in your damage range.

Then there's the effect of weapon mastery...

Kale, I was trying to keep it as simple as possible, as Tehshadowninjar was having troubles understanding. A lot of people here don't have a clue what damage rating or the armor multiplier is. While most of the veterans probly know them, they probably also know what the critical hit multiplier is as well.
