Default I'm trying to decide on a defensive skill.

Currently I run both a Boon build for fun and a WOH build for pvp, to be honest some days now it's seeming that the Boon build would work better, especially since the only weapon set that I currently have is the Brohn's set, so all healing prayers is beneficial (minus RoF and Guardian).

I'm an oldschool player. I just came back to the game recently, I was kind of scared when I saw stuff like Remove Hex having a one sec cast time.

So my question is, what are people using now?

I'm currently playing Mo/Me for all of my builds, mostly managing my energy by casting efficiently, but I play with Ether Sig on my bar for emergencies.

I usually run RoF, Sig of Rejuv, WoH, Guardian, Holy veil, Ether sig, Dwayna's Kiss and Prot spirit (which I'm changing to spirit bond now, after doing some reading)

I might try out Mo/E for Glyph of Lesser energy, but right now I'm mostly focusing on what I want to use to stay alive. I've gone Mo/A before and used the running skills, but I find myself going too low too often in that case.

So, any suggestions?

If your playing in 4-man arenas I would take a stance like Disciplined stance. It saves you from monk stomp, allows you to get important casts of when being ranger camped and is your best bet at removing daze, as well as being a strong counter to KD's.

The Standard Arena Bars:

[skill]Word of Healing[/skill][skill]Patient Spirit[/skill][skill]Guardian[/skill][skill]Mend Condition[/skill][skill]Mending Touch[/skill][skill]Holy Veil[/skill]
[skill]Zealous Benediction[/skill][skill]Reversal of Fortune[/skill][skill]Guardian[/skill][skill]Mend Condition[/skill][skill]Mending Touch[/skill][skill]Holy Veil[/skill]

Your last slots are just your spec versus certain teams. If you take /R, /A or /W, you're hoping for physical matchups. If you take /Me, you're defending versus hex matchups. If you take /E, you're hoping for physical matchups or e-management. Or you could just use general prot. Spirit Bond is hardly useful in TA anymore; if you're unfortunate, about 1% or 2% of your matches can benefit from it. Protective Spirit can be very useful in RA; eles are popular, people are slow to bring enchantment removal, and they're likely to train you for extended periods of time, so it can be very functional.

My primarily slots rotate:

[skill]Shield Bash[/skill][skill]Disciplined Stance[/skill]: versus physical teams. You can use Shield Stance for Shield Bash. Tactics: 8 or 9.
[skill]Divine Spirit[/skill][skill]Shield Bash[/skill]: versus mixed teams. You can use Deny Hexes for Holy Veil. Divine Favor: 13

Disciplined Stance is sexy. But best for ZB bars.

Hybrids can't be ran effectively, I don't think if speccing in 4 attributes.

There's also Return and Dark Escape. Which require no investment to be effective.

I prefer GoLE, though. Quality energy management.

Well when I pick up GWEN I'm basically going to be tossing Holy Veil for Cure Hex and then I just have to decide on where to put Patient Spirit.

I think I'm gonna try a GoLE build for once, like I said, back when I played a LOT barely anyone used it.

What do you guys think of healer's boon + heal other + GoLE?

Heal Party aswell.

I think HB was mainly intended to fuel this party heal. But you can always take Heal Other.

When I use healers boon I usually run..

RoF
Kiss
Dismiss
Sig of Rejuv
Ethereal Light
Guardian
Healer's Boon
Ether Signet

I sometimes switch out Guardian for Orison of healing, depends on what I'm doing at the time.

What do you think about tossing Kiss for Heal Other and Ether sig for GoLE?

Or should I just play my normal cookie cutter WoH build? :P

Ether Signet is bad, and your bar lacks Heal Party.

Healers' Boon isn't really ment to be a hybrid, either. So it's not suited for places that are sorta like 4v4.

You also lack Hex Removal. Dismiss, yeah, well, every Monk should take both Hex and Condition removal.

Keep to WoH Hybrid.

Meh, I've never found much that can beat a classic WoH build.. sadly...

I wish I could use something else, but I hate ZB <_<

their are still other elites out their;
RC, i like this one also in PvE. Maybe not really the best elite at some places, but still is a hack of an elite.
WoH, Normal hybrid bar, sorry folks. however their are also WoH prot bars where WoH is the only (next to some conditional) red bar up skill.
Glimmer of Light, spamable 1/4 casting skill, spammable, did i noticed that also?
B-Light, fun skill... yes and still good around also. however needs energy management due to 10 energy cost. would like to see a lower energy cost on this skill.
HB is mostly nice for "bar-topping" with cure hex, prot spirit and dismiss condition. (however is prot spirit needed everywhere?)
Signet of Judgement on signet smite build with Mantra of Inscriptions.

ZB is a skill i don't like also, however comes effective within 4 party teams (RA, TA, pve in Ascalon, Shing Jea, Istani) and extended area's what are 6 party teams, however some area's off 6 needs more bang for the money and need 2 monk party.

SoD is a nice skill around and still very nice against PvE mobs who like to do less casting and more hitting.

Those are good you could also use [balanced stance],[shield stance] or [deflect arrows].

mobility>active defense with shield stance bud

as for defensive what nots, pack a small precasting enchantment and that should be more than enough most of the time. GolE has far too much emanagement to pass up imo, but if you must, i'd say a 0 spec return or 8 spec dstance is fine....

if you want to get really into the more... interesting aspects of monking, swap to a +5e 20% bow with dshot here and there, and pack natural stride lol..

Currently I'm using some assassin skills (mostly random teleports, sometimes I go with dash) and weapon switching to manage my energy, finally picked up a new high energy set today.

I agree with the statement that mobility is greater than blocking, especially since you can just self cast guardian and then use another class' skills to get away from you enemies. Against casters you can just easily exploit line of sight, there's almost always something to obstruct their view, and dodging projectiles is always easy with a bit of practice.

Fainty I completely agree with what you said... I'd love to see a lower cost on B-Light.. RC is a little too conditional for me (oof, pun), since I can get a higher heal from something like (dare I say it) WoH and still remove conditions with dismiss, but there's a lot of times that I see one of those silly cover conditions and wish I could remove it.

Glimmer of Light is a fun elite, but it's one that requires a lot of practice. I remember when Nightfall first came out, almost every monk picked it up and then dumped it because they said it drained your energy too quickly. I find that if I use Glimmer in the right way, I love it, but I haven't touched it in so long I'd need quite a bit of practice with it now :P (I've been away from the game for almost a year).

I tried doing a Scribe's Insight/Mantra of Inscriptions build a while ago, it worked decently but it needs fine tuning, I might just go try that for a bit of novelty.

I revisited your arena bar Sunfire, and I like the idea of having Touch as your self condition removal, but I don't think I have the room to pack two condition removals and be happy with my build.

Guardian
Patient Spirit (When I pick up GWEN)
WoH
Mend Condition
Mending Touch
Cure Hex (When I pick up GWEN)
Dash
Return

This might be something I'd be happy with.

Really now, what do you think of simple old Remove Hex?

I understand why you use Holy Veil, but I never like maintained enchants on a build where I don't use it.

The only real use for it is casting it pre-battle on a target you're HOPING will get a hex stack, then canceling it to remove the bottom hex, which you're HOPING will be the one they're trying to cover. It does make it easy for interrupters though. I've used Holy Veil forever, but I really did enjoy seeing Remove Hex changed to a 1 sec cast.

It doesn't last that long.Lets see at 4 tactics [shield [email protected]] and at 6 tactics[shield [email protected]]It will only last 2 to 4 sec.

Shield stance and deflect arrows are both quite bad. One of a casters best defense is kiting, and you'll be moving slower with shield stance. Even if it only lasts a few seconds, you don't want to be moving slower. As for deflect arrows, it's too conditional to be useful tbh. If there are no rangers/paragons on the other team, it's a wasted skill slot. Of course balanced stance is quite conditional too, knockdowns can be quite deadly. At least as a monk, you can bring guardian for a block.

These are the only onces you want to use in 4v4 really. For 8v8 GoLE is the best no doubt.

[disciplined stance] [shield stance]

Both are pretty much the same. One makes you move slower, one gives you +24 armor.

Please tell me why you would use shield stance over disciplined stance.

These are the only ones I really use. I only play RA though, and I only use them when iv got 2/3 melee or dazed from something like temple strike.

About mending touch, it comes in handy against wounding strike and temple strike, where the key condition is covered. I'm still debating whether its worth a slot though. Same with patient spirit and RoF. Don't know whether I should take out RoF.
