Has Anyone Ever Tried....
Hey everyone, I have recently just returned to Guild Wars so I guess I am a Re-Noob and atm I have Prophecies and Factions and trying to re-learn the playstyle. I was just wondering has anyone ever tried a build for a sword and board ranger with any success or is it even a plausible choice? I tried experimenting with one before I left and was doing fairly well with it but would like some feedback on any suggestions for this kind of build. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yes. It can work quite well (in pve anyway) but you need nightfall, either for rampage as one or never rampage alone.

It's pretty bad, for PvE the best you could pull off would be something with [[Dragon Slash] and [[Save Yourselves! (luxon)]
[build prof=R/W name="Dragon Ranger" box sword=12 exp=8+1 beast=10+1+1 desc="Weapon 1: Vamp sword{br}Weapon 2: Furious sword"][dragon slash][brawling headbutt][steelfang slash][never rampage alone][save yourselves (luxon)][comfort animal][charm animal][resurrection signet][/build]
Of course, it's not quite so compelling with EotN, Nightfall and decent title tracks - really, a swordsman needs PvE skills to compete effectively with other ranger builds. Without the PvE skills and other games, I'd stick to hammer or axe if you wanna whack stuff with warrior weapons.

It really needs FGJ just to be even remotely effective, as well as an IAS. Without FGJ you're gonna hit Dslash, then wait for it to fill up, hit it again, wait, again, wait, and so on. With FGJ and [Enduring Harmony] you can keep SY and Dslash spammed constantly until it runs out.

I'd personally drop res sig for FGJ!, with an SY! spammer your team shouldn't die much tbh... I just don't like recommending builds without res; and Headbutt + Steelfang is, basically, more useful generally for the main bar than FGJ!
KD kicks ass.
Read carefully [[never rampage alone]'s description.

EH isn't an option - this is a R/W sword guy we're talking about.

Try this, it does some pretty decent damage. Use a zealous sword hilt and a +30 shield to keep your energy up for rampage. If it's for PvE and you don't want a rez, maybe substitute poisonous bite or predator's pounce.

He says he has Prophicies and Factions only so how bout giving him a build with skills from those games only, it would be more helpfull.
try this
[skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Sever Artery[/skill][skill]Seeking Blade[/skill][skill]Pure Strike[/skill][skill]Distracting Blow[/skill][skill]Escape[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]
Attribute spread:
Sword - 12
Expertise - 14 or 15
WS - Whatever is left + minor rune
Take advantage of the Experise factor on attack skills and aviod too many Addrenl skills.
Use Apply + Sever to get your opponet to max degen
Your Up there in the Melee so Escape is for Defense, if your not worried about Defense then Swap out Escape for [skill]Hundred Blades[/skill] so you can apply posion to adjacent foes as well, and drop Seeking for [skill]Lightning Reflexes[/skill]
there are better opportunities if you go Axe over Sword though. and do as Mastar of Warriors suggests, re-think only haveing Factions and Prohicies.

I would NOT consider Seeking Blade and Pure Strike to be honest, even taking advantage of Ranger's Expertise they're bad.
And no Deep Wound on a melee guy is kinda bad.
I would consider speccing into Beast Mastery, taking out Troll Unguent, Pure Strike and Seeking Blade, and using Tiger's Fury, Gash and Sun and Moon Slash.
(Maybe remove Escape for Dragon Slash or something, Rangers never get targetted for me. )
I understand you about using energy skills though, but not many Warrior energy skills are really any good.

I would not conside Pure and Seeking either, but with just Prophicies and Factions there is little to choose from. Seeking isin't total crap, it's spammable +Dmg and since a Ranger has no bonus Armor Pen from Strength like a Warrior he will need spammable bonus damg to make up for it.
[skill]Gash[/skill] should be in there though I suppose.
It does need an IAS, like Tigers, which is why I suggested a swap to LR, cause with no IAS adrenil skills are a waste, which is also why I went with energy skills, but there is no defense and He WILL get targeted sometime.
Maybe with Brawler's Insignias and a +5 Armor sword handle you can drop the defensive skills. Get yourself up to 93 armor (70 base + 10 insignia + 5 handle + 8 shield = 93) to somewhat compare to a Warrior. But then I guess people can argue for Survivors and a +30 handle.
Not Dragon Slash though, no way to keep it up to be effective. Hundred Blades is no bonus Dmg, but hits ajacent foes, great way to spread Posion.

I want to thank everyone so far for their advice and please keep any further ideas comming. I should be snatching up NF and EoTN in the next week or so but I just thought I might try a little different kind of build. Thanks again everyone.

If you're getting NF and you want to go melee, scrap the entire Sword idea and use Escape Scythe Spammer Ranger.

Didn't read NRP description :X my bad. But you can put EH on a para hero, such as rac's 2 para, orders derv build, thus making it so you have enduring harmony on you. Just gotta do some micro'ing there. It's not much of a hassle tho, I do that on my derv all the time.
