Earth magic is awesome.
I would like to point out a few of the more awesome earth skills. (because I'm tried of hearing about fire.)
Obsidian Flame: Ignores armor! FTW. Exhaustion! ftl... but seriously a wonderful spike.
Crystal wave/Tenai's Crystals: Not Really Elemental Damage! Mostly Ignores Armor! AoE! FTW. Slow Recharge! ftl... but seriously still great skills.
Sliver Armor: Hits random foes! Very very quickly! Over and over! For a decent duration! And mediocre defense as well! And rawks for farming! FTW. ...no really not really any downside to this, nope. Double FTW.
Stoneflesh Aura: Highest DR in the game (excluding % damage reduction spells)! Infinitely chainable! Cheap! FTW. slow initial cast time! ftl. But you can just use a glyph of concentration anyway.
Unsteady Ground, Churning Earth, and Eruption: AoE! Decent damage! Heavily disruptive! Relatively quick casting time! FTW. Slow recharge! ftl... but throw these into a fray, totally worth it.

Those are the skills I run on my earth ele. Unsteady and churning are awesome in HM because they attack faster and they always have a speed buff(+50%). Lots of kds ^^

Sliver, Stoneflesh, Tennai's / Crystal should stay with farming.
Obs Flame should stay with spikes with Glyph of Energy.
Unsteady and Eruption are approved for me, anyway.

All the earth ticking AoEs are awesome. Wards are really useful. Stoning isn't great, but it's a fun toy. Earthquake is one of the best nukes in the game.
Stoneflesh aura, sliver armor, and all the tanking stuff means you're a terrible player, or a farmer.
The PBAoEs can actually be ok with the reduced aftercast, but they're decidedly gimmicky.

id like to point out that sliver armor's attack rate is only fast if there are alot of things hitting you.
Its pretty poor damage against one or two things.

Agreed, unless you're farming, Sliver is pretty bad. If you want block, bring Ward Against Melee; at least that helps your team. The Crystal spells also suck outside of farming; PBAoE on a squishie that removes my team's deep wounds? No thanks. Unsteady and Eruption are nice skills, though. I don't like Churning Earth in NM, but it's decent in HM because the monsters are always moving faster, triggering the kd.

Earth eles I find are the best tanks in the game (yes, I know theres a lot of Ws and Ds etc who will disagree.)
Just slap on Glyph of Quickness, then Obs Flesh, Stoneflesh, Stone Striker, Mantra of Earth, Armor of Earth, Grasping Earth, etc, and its pure uber tanking.

You forgot about [[Magnetic Surge] its also a nice source of armor ignoring damage and doesn't have as much of a drawback as condition removal or exhaustion.

What does attacking faster have to do with 'if you're attacking'? There is no delay between attacks, so it doesn't matter if they have IAS or not, they'll still be knocked down the same number of times, only they'll get, on average, more hits in between knockdowns.
The only real argument in this situation is the fact that, in HM, they're high levelled, so attacks deal a ton of damage, so the knockdowns prevent them from occurring.

Sand Storm is pretty good imo.. unsteady ground beats it in utility but SS is good damage (assuming the foes doesn't simply run out of it)

Too many of the good offensive earth spells mess with your ability to control the AI, but there's always room earth defense somewhere on my team's bar.

All elemental lines are good. Earth's too defensive IMO. Yes I know there are some great damage skills there butt I love spike damage that comes with Air.

[build prof=E/N box earth=12+1+1 energystorage=10+1 curses=8][unsteady ground][eruption][earthquake][ward against melee][enfeebling blood][stoning][earth attunement][glyph of lesser energy][/build]
Is my current favorite. Drop earthquake for a rez, churning earth, or PvE skills if you need. The ward slot can be used for any ward, depending on what you're facing. Enfeebling blood can just be [[email protected]] if you're a sissy.

I use a similar build to the good Dr's, except I slot PvE skills too [[great dwarf weapon] and [[ebon battle standard of wisdom] are really awesome.

I have to say I do love my Earth build's! They have good defensive skills and there offensive skills can cause a nice bit of damage. Im favouring Sandstorm at the moment. I think the earth elites are generally better than the fire elite, but as an ele if you dont run a fire build you must be a bad ele!
