i expected assassins to be freaky morfed ninjas that could pop out of the ground (which they kinda can) and stab somebody, turn invisible, throw a few smoke bombs, then commit seppuku.

Agreed, I expected a class that is capable of fast high dmg spikes, but weak in defense. I was let down by all of the shadow skills which allowed Assassins to stay in the thick of battle. Sure, it gave the class more options, but that's the opposite of how the classic Assassin (in history and literature) have been portrayed. An Assassin should sneak in, do incredible dmg, then sneak out.

For much of the game, you can play as you described. Two shadow-steps (in and out) and a bunch of attacks. You go after already weakened targets, kill and get out.

Then you stand around in the backline doing emotes and watching the show for 20++ seconds waiting for your stuff to recharge. When you are all ready to strike again, there are no mobs left and your teammates are cussing you.

That style of play, while very Assassin-ish, is also very inefficient. You are playing with 8/64 of the party's skill bars and doing what someone else can do with two skills. That style of play is easily replaceable with Assassin's Promise + Ebon Vanguard Assassin Support, only with a faster recharge.

I read up on assassins before making one and for the most part got what I expected, a fast and devestating melee fighter that suffers from shakey defenses.

The assassin was the last of the 3 melee professions I tried, and it has since become my favorite physical class (closely followed by dervs). It isn't very true to the "assassin ideal" but the pve skills for assassins let them tear up the frontlines in PvE like no other, nightfall was never as easy as when I went through with my assassin.

I actually expected insta gib spikers which they are... amusingly ANet have been so obvious in all the different campaigns, the only surprises are due to all the nerfings...

What I expected the sin class to be?

Well...

[skill]Aura of Displacement[/skill] followed by 20 secs of [skill]Blackout[/skill]

I think A-net were bang on with AoD suiting Assassins.

I think the problem with the guild wars community's expectations with the 'Assassin' came from the obvious Factions asian theme. Assassins aren't all ninjas. A guy can have a rifle, blowgun, hand gun, use poison, and still be an assassin. Assassination is misdirection, and efficiency. (critical strikes and shadow arts.)

It stupefies me to see what people expected out of the class. (And still try to do.) Obviously some people watch too much bloody animé.

I grew up on stuff like D&D and a slew of d&D/dragonlance books.... i thought assassin would have the ability to poison weapons, dual wield just about anything <still waiting for a class that can dual wield 2 zodiac sword instead of the ghetto daggers>..... instead of critical strikes, <or in addition too them> have the ability to (lets say 1%) instantly kill target with a mortal wound.....
removal of dodge/evade made assassins kinda screwy.... cuz an assassin wouldn't block.. he would A) parry, or B) evade and counter.. lack of a stealth system made me take a 6 month break from guild wars... came back and perma shadow formed my way to an accumulated 20million<gold value at 100 each) in chocolate bunnies <i love those things>.... 9 minute solo "clearing the chamber" all the way to reaper and EXP reward with a custom made build...

to second question of OP, NEVER.... anet beat sins with the nerf bat so hard they're perma dazed.. not buying GW2, or any other areanet game because of the severe disrespect towards assassins

I didn't really know what to expect. Just though they'd be like normal assassins.

Once I understood how to use them i was pretty happy. Which was the second time remade a one.

I expected the assassin to be sort of a midline character,
with really fast disruption/shutdown/damage in
short spurts, not a DPS character. Basically, something good
really fast followed by a lot of:

Yup, I was a narutard....
nah I did that when factions beta was out... me and my cousin when exploring around factions.... with Shadow Form and Shadow Step and Return.... lol it was crazy amounts of fun..

i made my assassin when factions came out... beat shiro then instantly went to delete him as assassins have no use in PvE..... 2 days ago almost 2 years later I remade my assassin as a critical A/D and with Critcal Agility + Critical Defenses + Way of the Assassin + Way of the Master + Critical Eye = God Mode...

at lvl 15 I was tanking better than nub wammos....
