I would say the barrage ranger.
AoE is always good.

It changes with each area i just switch back and forth with different areas along with you must take condition removing mobs into account for burning arrow build.

What is your attribute setup? It should be possible to maintain BA, energy wise.
Poison isn't that effective when the opponent is dead 5 seconds after getting poisoned. It's useful against bosses and their groups.

I use a general Barrage/Pet build for PvE, and it works fine in most cases.
[skill]Barrage[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Whirling Defense[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill][skill]Comfort Animal[/skill][skill]Charm Animal[/skill]
Only barrage and the two animal skills are set in stone for the build. The rest depend on the area you're exploring and your second profession.

minus Distracting shot and add in rebirth and you have the build that sucessfully took me all the way through prophecies (back in the days before the Factions and NF skills)

or you could take:
Broad Head Arrow
Pindown
Read The Wind
Distracting shot/savage shot
Trow dirt
Lightning Reflexes (better then whirling after the buff)
Running skill
Rez
Marks: 12+1+3
Expertise: 12+1
the rest where ever.
Works exeptionally good vs casters and you hav protection vs meeles to.
If you insist on bringing barrage, Try going R/Rt and bring splinterweapon.
IMHO Barrage is not the best Elite among ranger elites. its easy to use, thats why its so poppular.
Try BHA, its the greatest vs eles, monks and casters in general.

Barrage is extremely boring to play, that's why i always run an AP/BA build whenever i can. i do sometimes run barrage, but only whenevr necessary. dont bring screaming shot, as you will already have capped degen with AP/BA. With that build, have either 12 or 14 expertise to keep up with AP/BA. Here is what I run:
apply poison
burning arrow
distracting shot
savage shot
natural stride
troll unguent
frenzy (can take mending touch)
rez sig (can take rebirth)
exp-12+1+1
Marks-11+3
WS-6+1
or
exp-11+1
marks-10+3+1
ws-10+1
the above for easier energy, the below for improved apply, nat stride, and troll unguent. at 14 marks, u can constantly maintain burn and poison with about a 1 second gap, depending if IAS is up or not. It's very fun against bosses too even though it doesnt last long on them.

In a few areas where there are massive swarms of mobs, like Vizunah Square, Barrage is a good choice, but for general usage, I would suggest an Apply Poison type build that can deal strong damage to single targets while able to spread poison to other foes and extend your damage.

I use [skill]Read the Wind[/skill][skill]Poison Arrow[/skill] for zones where mobs can't be found. But in most places, you can easily get a mob together, with careful aggroing/a good tank/henchie(hero) manipulation
And once the mob is there, turn them into pincushions. A poison build is more effective, especially in areas with ranged enemies, but if you're like me and hate Tabbing through the enemies, it won't work properly.

Well met!
I have had some success with the following:
Expertise 14, Marksmanship 14, Wilderness 10
Crippling Longbow of blahblah, Barbed Flatbow of blahblah, Barbed Shortbow of blahblah, Vampiric Longbow of blahblah or weapon of choice
Crippling Shot [E] OR Pin Down, Barbed Arrows, Lightening Reflexes, Whirling Defense, Trolls Unguent, Crossfire, Splintershot OR Burning Arrow [E] or Barrage [E], and free slot for Signet.
Heros: Koss has a Barbed sword, Barbarous Slash and Gash (if I capped buffed Crippling Slash, he would add it); Olias is MM with Epidemic, Death Nova and Enfeebling Blood, Monk has Extend Conditions (if I capped Fevered Dreams, someone would add it).
If no Heros, I find a place on my bar for Epidemic.
Still tweaking this build, but I like Bleeding over Poison; more synergies possible.

Bleeding doesn't stack. If you play with warriors causing bleeding, you should use poison instead to have a 7 pips degen

Oohh, splinter barrage rocks!
And if you add a Dual Shot for a Nightmare Weapon spike... mm, dead enemy
This needs Factions, tho, and access to it. ^_^
