Default Returning to Guild Wars (a beginner's request for advice)

Howdy. I apologize in advance as this is my first post on GW Guru and I'm wont to screw it up.

I bought Guild Wars when it was first released and for no apparent reason stopped playing it shortly afterwards. I think I was having issues with the girl I was dating or something. Anyway, my friend and I are both very busy during the academic year and tend to take a little time off during the summers and relax with some nice computer games. Last summer we each subscribed to WoW for three months. I decided that I'd rather not do that anymore and remembered that I owned Guild Wars but had never really given myself time to appreciate or enjoy the game.

So, now I am currently strongly considering reinstalling it and casually (/possibly a bit more seriously than casually) playing it for as long as it holds interest I suppose. I've also already talked my buddy into purchasing Guild Wars [Prophecies as it is now called], since it's only 20 bucks (or a month and a bit of WoW).

I understand from having read some posts that the game has changed significantly since the release and that now Prophecies probably has a lot fewer players now. I was thinking about playing a Monk primary (with most likely a Mesmer secondary for the campaign) because from what I understand Monks tend to have less difficulty finding groups than other professions. Does that seem like a good idea?

Well, to be brief, I'm wondering what kinds of combinations of two characters would be fun and not exceedingly difficult? (especially for two guys who have little and no experience with GW and plan on at least starting only with Prophecies)

[I was going to keep asking more questions, but decided that if anyone was going to read the entire post, I should probably end it before long.]

Thank you kindly.

Prophecies is easy, and will most likely be made easier once hard mode is introduced, so just play what you think would be fun. Prophecies does have less people in it now, but there are still plenty of people around in most mission areas. (Except in the jungle, that place is deserted)

If you decide to play add me to your friends list, I will help with missions and quests when I am on.

Man I remember Prophecies beta days... those days were ugly, yet I still liked them. You are just lucky that you don't have to play in an all noob group, like the way I had to.

Well, I bought the game when it was released, or very shortly afterwards. If I recall I had a Ranger; I purchased from someone the highest damage bow I could find as soon as I could and then put all of my attributes into Marksmanship. The result was a stupidly imbalanced character. Like most new people I think I did not know exactly how to properly or successfully play through the game.

I'm rather sad that I didn't give it more of a chance. After watching some of the gameplay videos that some ridiculous (I use the word very positively) solo-ers and farmers have posted, I can't help but feel that the game seems to have a much more satisfying and complex combat system that WoW had (i.e. get awesome gear so you can kill stuff without thinking because your outfit is so much better than the other guy's that he is helpless and still wondering why he's playing-oh yeah he's paying a monthly fee...). Sorry, that wasn't constructive.

I have another question. What can one expect from the end game GW and how should that affect my choice of primary profession (seemingly, the one immutable aspect of one's character). What can people with only Prophecies do, and based on this which choice of class (gaah, I called primary profession, "class") ... profession would be the most rewarding. Alternately, which two primary professions could be very fun together (since my buddy seems like he will give GW a shot). I daresay that PvP at the highest, or even near-highest, level is probably out of my reach as I doubt that I'd be able to commit that much to a guild (assuming that GW guilds demand a fraction of what WoW guilds seemed to). I feel like my buddy and I might have to set our sights more on something like high end PvE; either solo or duo farming or playing with full groups. Or is it even worth it to try to do such things with only Prophecies. (a side note: my buddy really seems to enjoy making "money" in online games, so I feel like he would definitely be attracted to level twenty play which would facilitate opulence.)

Thanks a lot. I'm really wondering if I should wait to reinstall Guild Wars until after I take the MCAT. I'm worried that I might really want to get through the game very quickly and be distracted from other things, like ensuring the competitiveness of my medical school applications... Peace
