It might help to know if it is PvE, PvP, archer, daggers, or whatever you are looking for?

Nothing to laugh at.
But we're all in the same boat, trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. It's a bit early to rely on others, when you could be the one discovering an interesting combo...

Read the shadow art skills, more than half are awesome for Rangers.
Shadow Refuge may be the best non-elite self heal in the game. It gives more health than TU is half the time.
Death's charge + Throw Dirt = Awesome!
I have not tested Way of the Fox yet, but:
Enchantment Spell. For 10...30 seconds, your next 1..5 attacks cannot miss.
Also look at Spirit Walk, Vipers Defense, Shadowy Burden, Mirrored Stance, Caltrops. All awesome ranger powers!
Here is a little build I created for FUN rather than utility or damage (though it does OK on both). It uses skills easily obtained in the monastery either from the training missions or from the monastery skill trader.
Attributes:
I got a max damage bow req 9 and a set of decent daggers that req 9. 3-4 points in WS for apply poison, and the rest split between expertise and shadow arts (about 7 each)
The powers:
Savage Shot
Apply Poison
Deaths Charge
Throw Dirt
Jagged Strike
Fox Fangs
Shadow Refuge (Self Heal)
Rez Sig or Whirling Defense
Basically you have a great bow combo, a great dagger combo, and a great defensive combo.
Apply poison works on arrows and daggers and stacks with bleeding that jagged strike deals. Its a good alpha strike followed by savage shot.
Deaths charge puts you close enough to throw dirt and whip out the daggers.
Jagged strike is a lead, and fox fangs is an unmissable offhand.
Obviously a better build would either focus on bow or focus on daggers, but this gives you enough "toys" to play with to have fun.

I ran into a R/A pvp char the other day that used no bow skills what-so-ever all Ranger speed skills and Assasin attack skills - we'd just point him in the general direction of the oposing team and heal him... I'd stack degen on the same target and he'd tear through em...
I just started an Assasin to unlock the skills for my pvp slot

I'd agree with Demon. As an R/A, your best bet is to use your daggers. Get a decent expertise level and you can sustain your assault for a good while. Maybe add a little Wilderness Survival for apply poison and/or troll ungent. And those speed skills will do great to enhance the hit and fade style that makes an assassin so effective.

That R/A build was probably the premade one.
Anyway, this probably wouldn't work too well, but what about teleport + trapping?

Probably not teleport + trapping.
Teleporting gets you in and out fast, but does not keep you from getting shot at and interrupting the trap. Trapping in battle is more reliably done with Dodge (or "Zojun's Haste" as it is called in Factions, and you can even have both) or throw dirt.
The big picture is this: whether you play an R/A as a dagger assassin enhanced with expertise skills, or a bow ranger enhanced with shadow arts skills, this is one very versatile combination.

Be that as it may, he still wants a good build for his rangers ass... Id suggest dead lifts, and squats.

R/A Spike Madness with my Needling Lotus Blossom build.
Here's my fun R/A build:
Needling Lotus Blossom by Arafeandur of HoB.
Golden Lotus Strike
Wild Strike (or Temple Strike Elite)
Death Blossom
Shadow Step (make your Shadow Arts low enough to *only* give you enough time to quickly pull off your three dagger attacks)
Needling Shot
Troll Unguent
Read The Wind
Resurrection Signet
Have 2 Necros with you to lay down Order of Pain or Order of the Vampire + Well of Power or Well of Blood as you kill foes, in addition to providing as much massive health degen as possible.
Have a Ritualist with you to lay down Weapon enchantments on you to boost your Dagger and Needling shot damage, as well as laying defensive spirits at the teleport location and ressing.
Have a Monk/Mesmer with you to provide the bulk of the healing, resurrection, interrupts, and maybe Judge's Insight.
Have 3 other R/A's with you with the exact same build to flesh out your Spike team.
Set up Rit spirits at the teleport location, preferably at the same time you teleport to the foe. Spike the target with all three dagger attacks, and as you 'port back, switch to a Vampiric Shortbow of Shelter.
Needle shot for teh win, assuming the target survived the 4-way Assassin combos.
Thoughts?

if u want to use daggers might as well roll an A/R. i know expertise can help with the energy but u do so much more damage with crit strikes. there are other ways to help with energy if u need it, such as zealous daggers or skills like way of the empty palm
as far as R/A i suggest use a bow and ranger skills for attacking, and shadow art skills for defense.
either way its not recommended to try to do both. there might be a few usable builds that use both daggers and bows but not many since u need to use up a lot of skill slots to do so, and doesnt leave much room for defense / escape
the two classes do work well together as long as u focus on one style of attack, and good defensive measures to match
regarding the trapper / teleporter comments, there is an elite in factions that allows u to trap without being easily interrupted. not sure it would be a great build but it seems to me it would be workable

hm not bad. what about swapping savage shot for lacerate. put down the spirit, charge, and in your first jagged strike your victim has a -10 degen.
