Default What do you guys think about this build?

Hey there guys. My first character was a monk and I've always hated his frailness. So I've decided to go out and create a manly warrior, who can take hits and keep tankin'!

Although I dont have all the skills yet, this is what i am aiming for.

Attributes:
Protection Prayers: 12+2 (major rune) = 14
Strength: 12+2 (major rune) = 14
Swordsmanship: whatever i have left over + 2 (duelists helm and minor rune)

I will use vigor runes to regain the hp lost after using the major runes.

Skills:
Galrath Slash
Sever Artery
Gash
Sprint
Endure Pain
Rebirth
Shield of Regeneration
Vital Blessing

If I'm soloing, I'll probably replace Rebirth with Final Thrust or something. Another option might be to emphasize my high protection prayers and throw in something like Shielding Hands or Reversal of Fortune.

Basically... he's a big ol' tank. He'll be able to take a lot of damage and keep trucking. I'll probably use Knight's armor to absorb damage.

Thoughts?

It sounds decent, but has a few problems. One thing to note is you can't use runes on your secondary profession, so your maximum protection would have to be 12. Shield of Regeneration is too mana intensive for a warrior, especially one maintaining an enchantment (vital blessing) and would only be on half of the time. Using 12 protection and 12 strength would give you only 3 attributes on swordsmanship, not enough to meet the requirement of a max damage weapon.

More realistically, you would be using attributes for your weapon, strength, and tactics. Some leftover points could go into protection for shielding hands, but don't place too many in protection. If you want to do some serious tanking, you would attempt to increase your armor as much as possible while using stances to evade attacks.

You said you would use "vigor runes," and I just want to let you know that they do not stack; one vigor rune is as effective as 5. Unless, of course, you already knew that and meant you would use a vigor rune. Don't use full knight's armor, as the damage reduction is global. That is, one piece of knight's armor reduces the damage from an attack no matter where it struck the body. A good choice is gladiators if plan to use a lot of mana and/or tank a lot of physical damage.

But it sounds like you've got the idea of a warrior, tanking enemies and absorbing damage.

Great information aB-. Another thing I would like to note is, if your planning on having your Warrior/Monk tank, it would be best to use more points into tactics and strength than your weapon. So if your weapon requirement is 7, meet the requirement, and put some into healing (if your not gonna have a healer in your group or if your soloing) and max out the 2 main attributes i mentioned, including with runes and helm. If your a bit low on cash, major vigor is only 12hp?(correct me if im wrong) less than a superior vigor rune. And absorbption is definitely better to go with major than superior since the damage reduction is only 1 point. Remember, this is if you don't have that much money to spend on extras. If your filthy rich, then by all means, spend!
Investing in a good shield that gives you: -2 dmg (while enchanted) and -2 dmg (while stanced); or -2 dmg (while enchanted) +35hp, would be great as well. Good mods for your sword would be: fortitude (more hp), enchanting (lengthens enchants' duration), defense (+armor), etc. Hope that helps to add to aB- great advice. Try using the search tool and use the words "tank", "W/Mo tank", or "tank build" to see if you can find a premade build with more advice and even perhaps a walkthrough on how to use the build.

ok cool. thanks for the advice.

so what if i went with something like this:

don't know exact attributes, would probably max out in tactics, and split the rest between strength and swordsmanship, with a little in protection prayers

Bonetti's Defense
Deadly Riposte
Gladiator's Defense (E)
Endure Pain
Reversal Of Fortune
Galrath Slash
Rebirth
Sprint

Basically I'd run in, start hacking away, and use the tactics abilities to protect myself. Spam Reversal of Fortune to heal myself if necessary. Very endurance-based, and would take a while to kill stuff. If I were soloing I'd probably replace Rebirth with Final Thrust.

I'd probably go with Tactician's Helm, Knight's Gauntlets, and have the rest be Glad's armor for plenty of energy for casting.

Has this improved?

All of this depends on your goal. If you are going solo it will wary alot on where you go. I use this build while farming Griffons and Trolls

Cyclone Axe
Bonettis defense
Gladiators Defense
Sprint
Healing BReeze
Live Vicariously
Balthazaars Spirit
Mending

Using full Glad armor except a Strength helm and Kniights Boots.

Build Credit goes to Battle Torn

For this build, put 8 in healing, and then max your axe. Pump Tactics and Strength about equal.

For Questing, I usually bring...

Cyclone Axe
Executioners Strike
Penetrating Blow
Sprint/ Endure Pain
Gladiators Defense
Healing Breeze
Rebirth
Mending/ skill of Choice

The slashies are really lenient. I like Mending while soloing as it can increase the life span tremendously. But alot of players swear against it. I take endure when Im with a group, and Sprint when Im alone. Endure lets me tank more, but when your alone you usually cant tank forever.

To switch to a sword build put in Galraths and maybe Hundred Blades, or another skill of choice...

I would definitely advise high tactics attribute as a swordsman, simply for the beneficial value of Riposte. Most of the good solo builds I have seen for swordsmen have Riposte in them. Gladiator's defense and Healing Sig benefit greatly from tactics too, obviously.

I have found that tactics swordsmen are the best at being a stance tank, they can't kill very fast, but they usually don't need to, they generally Riposte/Gladiator's Def. the target till below 1/2 health and then Final Thrust till death. Also since they're stancing, they take a nice good long time to die.

I'm thinking that Thrill of Victory could help increase my damage output, assuming that because I'm such a tank, I will have more hp than the opponent
