Default Dissatisfied with Assassin Armor?

Anyone else dissatisfied with the way Anet portrayed Assassin armor? The choices (infiltrator, nightstalker, valkaryie, shrouded, etc...) all look Dominatrix style... What happened to more traditional asian clothing? is the starter "Tenderfoot" armor the only traditional armor available for people who don't want to look like a porcupine with a fetish for S&M??? Anet, please give us variety like how you treated Warrior armor!!!

i think the armor level is too low, only 70 i thought, but since u have to play as a warrior u take much dmg and die quickly...or maybe i need a different playstyle

Assassin's aren't supposed to tank.... they're supposed to move around quickly, dash in for a few hits, and then get back out. Thats the purpose of their "shadow step" skills. If you want to tank, go get a W/A and use the assassin skills.

Thank you very much. At least someone agrees with me. Even a female warrior looks more like an assasin that the actual assasin!!!

Check out my other post for proof: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...d.php?t=142715

Now.. That's an assasin!!!

So because that's how D2 did their assassin, that's how ANET should do theirs... Sounds like sound logic to me.

These assassins aren't portrayed as (nor meant to be, imo) Ninjas. They may be VERY similar in behavior (stealthy and the such), but I believe they are trying to equate them more as "snipers" in this instance.

Here's my logic. An assassin is (dictionary.com): "One who murders by surprise attack, especially one who carries out a plot to kill a prominent person."

The Assassin here is going to research his "prominent" target, study and plot a plan to take out said target. They are going to bring along the proper clothing, weapons, and items to accomplish this. When they're done, they're going to return and find a new "prominent" target.

This is similar to what a sniper does (when not used to gather intel.) They are tasked a target, or "type" of target. They plan out their mission, gather their gear and step off. When they're done (unless re-tasked) they return and begin again.

Now a Ninja (at least in Hollywood...) may be tasked against a specific target, but if the shit hits the fan, they're still able to take on all comers. A compromised sniper team is going to call for help and then escape and evade, not turn into Rambo. This is similar to what I believe the Assassin is portrayed here.

Now as far as clothing and that, well, think about it. Ultimately someone who is going to try and slip in unnoticed should be wearing simple or less-noticable clothing. You want to blend in, be no more recognizable than any other person. You DEFINATELY want to avoid the "That scantly chick with the huge rack and a bunch of weapons" as you would be recognized and tracked rather easily.

Now of course, in a fantasy game, 'no one' "wants" to play the "average" character ("but I'm playing this game to be someone DIFFERENT than who I am. If I wanted to be an average person, I'd go outside...") I've had to deal with this an ungodly amount of times in RPGs, but that's besides the point. You don't WANT to be the "bad ass looking SUPER COOL cyber-ninja assassin cyborg" or whatever, because then everyone would say "Hey look, there's the bad ass looking..." But this is a fantasy game, and I think ANET is doing a good job at trying to compromise some shread of realism with Fantasy RPers desire to play the "cool" person.

So in conclusion (and I know I tend to be long winded) they're not (imo) Ninjas, nor should they be dressed as ninjas. Nor should ANET have to live up to some other game/style's depiction of a Ninja or Assassin.

-----

Richie> Perhaps the poster meant that Asassins aren't "thematically" meant to be "Tanks."

You're not going to think of someone who's meant to be stealthy and secretive, putting a lot of time and effort into killing a person or two as "charging into battle and taking on all foes."

I doubt they were making a comment on the concievability of them to tank (as just about any class CAN tank...)

An assassin going head on with a sword Warrior is death.
The warrior can inflict high damage on Assassins and last longer too. The point is that Assassins are for vsing casters with Spikes like A/R

An assassin can take out a warrior, but not directly. All it takes is one eviscerate to make that assassin very unhappy.

They aren't the best armorwise. They are equal to rangers. At least some of the forge armor equivalents have specific armor +10s for different types of damage, although I must say that it's quite horrible set up since energy is a problem if you are trying to also stay alive. Assassins could at least be given 5 extra armor to compensate for the fact that they have to fight close-quarters and then try to escape like a tank even though they aren't tanks.

if you had a a/monk i wonder if it could be able to tank with that vigious healing spell thing, if u got healed 9 for each attack u did, that be a lot of heal =o!

idk since the armor is the same i think ra/a is better simply for expertise, i mean you like never run outta energy..

I agree with Sidra about the AL. A tiny bit more AL should be enough to distinguish assassin armor - a close quarter combatant's armor - from a ranged attacker armor.
And Although I'm not exactly happy about the way armor looks, there are still many, many other armors to be seen, so I'm not too worried about that.

I used to think that R/A was the way to go, but four bars of regen combined with the bonus from critical strikes never had me worrying about energy. Not to mention critical eye is the bomb since it adds 1 extra energy from crits. Think about it this way, Critical Strike with Critical Eye on will only cost you 2 energy to use with zealous daggers. It's a dual attack so you'll be getting 4 energy per hit (2 from crit strikes, 1 from crit eye, and 1 from zealous).

Going by your logic that Assassins should not have the option of a ninja theme, Warriors on the other hand should never have Gladiator, Knight, Barbarian, etc themes as well...

Dictionary.com defines "Warrior" as broadly as they do an "assassin" : someone engaged in or experienced in warfare... No mention of it specifically being a certain theme, but what does one think about when one hears the word "Warrior"?

Dictionary.com also defines "ninja" as the following: A member of a class of 14th-century Japanese mercenary agents who were trained in the martial arts and hired for covert operations such as assassination and sabotage. Doesn't this sound more like the Assassin that Anet is portraying? After all, they're trying to have an ASIAN theme for the Continent of Cantha aren't they?

I'm not saying that Assassins should SOLEY be ninjas... I'm simply requesting that ANet cater to different themes that "Assassins" can have... sorta like how they did with the Warrior Profession... I mean, a "Warrior" can be anything from a Barbarian, Gladiator, or even a Samurai... not just the standard Knight correct? No restriction...

Using this perspective, I believe it's viable to request for Assassins to have different themes as well... Ninjas possibly being one of them, along with the current "Dominatrix" theme Anet proudly sports. Looking at the "Tenderfoot" starter armor set that they have, ANet seems to be aware of the class being portrayed as a "ninja".

Now I'm sure not everyone that chooses an Assassin will want to look like a ninja (despite the thousands of Assassins I see that sport names connecting themselves even somewhat remotely to "ninja" - n00b or otherwise), then again I'm sure there's an equal amount of people who do not want to look like that biker dood from the Village People.

I think the ONLY RPG that I've seen contain "Ninjas" is Final Fantasy XI... I don't know any other RPG that has it, though I can name various ones that have professions similar to it, in which most commonly refer to them as the Rogue/thief class...

I guess I fail to see where ANET hasn't lived up to your desires then. I mean, they have included a ninja-portrayed set, correct? As you said Warriors should be more than "knights" (still trying to figure out how you assumed I said warriors could only be knights.) they should in fact be "Gladiators, knights, barbarians, etc.." and ANET included armor sets to accomidate that, correct? Is it that you want more/all armor sets to be ninja-like?

And correct, ANET is using an Asian theme for the setting, but they don't seem to be restricting the character backgrounds (as much as a MMORPG character can have a background, that being appearance in this case). After all, you can make a non-Asian face/hairstyle/height. And your characters can come from other regions.

While the setting might be locational (I'm sure someone could give a specific region for the Tyria setting), perhaps ANET is allowing more of a cultural diversity in characters?

Could you clarify a bit more what exactly (description-wise) you're looking for? It might help me understand where you're going.

Also, just as a clarification, I was refering to the more pen&paper styled RPGs not video game RPGs.

Sure. The armor I'm talking about is the End Game armor... The Tenderfoot armor is the starter set, which i speculate will not be included as an "End Game Type" armor set (I hope I'm wrong about this). I merely mentioned it as reference to Anet's awareness that Assassins can be ninjas. As of current, there is no End Game Armor set available for the Assassin that even remotely looks like traditional ninja gear, judging from the armor merchants and pvp armor available.

In reference to gear variety, I do not want every single armor set to scream out "ninja"... As of current, each end game armor screams out "S&M" to me... Maybe Anet should diffirenciate the sets by themes, like thief, rogue, ninja, dominatrix, etc....

About the Tenderfoot armor set, though it does look nice and simple (sometimes simple can be good), I wish the mask would cover up the neck as well... or maybe include a scarf to cover it up. The Pants could be a bit baggier as well, kinda like how Regular Canthan Guards' Pants look like...

-In addition, I think I wouldnt find the current assassin armor choices too bad if it werent for the really tight butt hugger pants they have... Maybe Anet should make em just a bit more baggy, or add a skirt covering of some sort to hide the chicken legs.....

Well, we all know how sex sells. And anything that keeps players attention, keeps them playing the game, wanting to buy more chapters perhaps, etc.

But yeah, I agree. There could be more variety.. Perhaps a collectors set or two will be more traditional "Ninja" armor? And as its been said, there's always 15k and the FoW equvilent (should there be such equivilent).

While they are less likely to change astetics in leu of game mechanics, they may in fact change that too.

Time will tell at the end of April.
