Works well for let's say a warrior, ranger, or whatever that use a "Shocking" upgrade on their weapon.

Most underused skill in the game imo.
You don't need this for direct uses and should be in there even if you don't have someone who can pull off ele damage. Great for breaking up a retreat/screwing the flag carrier for several precious seconds (more if you can interrupt the hex removals).

Works nicely in tomb's king of the hill maps, instead of rushing the altar use this on their ghostly heros and they get delayed for a while

Underused indeed. Talk about a great way to stop any warrior from advancing on your monks, or a team attempting to flee.

It's... okay, but the only time I've really felt it's benefits is during the Doppleganger challenge for eles. Equip it and be invincible.

It's a hex spell, so you can't cast it on yourself. Even if the Doppelganger was moving 90% slower, that doesn't mean he still can't attack or cast spells. Still, he is moving ALOT slower, so I guess all he can do is cast spells.

You don't cast it, you let the Doppleganger cast it on you... then you cast away at your leisure and don't take damage.

Interesting thing to note is that even though the target is resistant to damage per the description of Iron Mist, they're still vulnerable to degen and I /think/ life stealing effects like vamp gaze, grenth's balance, etc.
They're also vulnerable to on-hit effects. Just like someone in mist form can be interrupted and knocked down, etc...you can do this to someone with Iron Mist, even if you can't damage them.
For instance, if you happen to spot an unsuspecting caster, you can use maelstrom and iron mist on them--it's a bit expensive, but with luck, timing, and perhaps some covering hexes, you should be able to keep casting down for at least a few seconds.

Degen and Life-Stealing is not considered damage by GW's standards.
I fought a team running an Iron Mist + Lightning damage build in GvG once, and it was annoying ><". Nice work by them though. Maybe it was because we were running Ranger Spike that we lost...o....Ranger Spike...you can't hate it...I luv it...I know this sentence is a huge run-on but...Ranger Spike.
RANGER SPIKE FTW!
