i dont like throw dirt on barragers.. Since you are a long ranger char, then you can sometimes stance behind the back line, becouse ur bow can shoot longer than the monks spellrange.. So if ur under melee attack, then something is very wrong.. And whirling def works against Arrow attacks..
And to the build maria posted, then if ur going for TopK Barrage team, then i would take distracting shot instead, cus you can disable the Wurms attacks..

Barrage
Throw Dirt
Distracting/Savage Shot
Free slot 1
Free slot 2 or Spirit Slot
Comfort Animal
Charm Animal
Rebirth/Res Signet
For tombs i'd bring Physical Resistance and probably a Spirit or Unguent, not like it was much use...
For FoW, Concussion Shot or Favourable Winds and Judges Insight
Thats the 1 i use anyway. 13 Expertise, 15 Marksmanship the rest Smiting. You can spam Barrage all day long and still gain energy from it. Shadow Beasts are funny to watch casting Consume Corpse in vane with Dazed on them...

If YOUR under melee attack, then you throw dirt on them and they're normally dead ~10 seconds later, if not your monk will know where to heal. If your caster is about to get raped by a Grasping Darkness, he's dead, Whirling Defences aint gonna save him is it. That and Fingers Of Chaos is makes Whirling a wasted slot since you can't evade when they use it. 5 seconds is easily long enough for an Eviscerate spike to kill you. If your talking about FoW, Abyssal and Berserkers? 1 carries a 102 + Crushing Blow to any caster that doesn't see it coming and run, the other just ends stances the moment they get near you.

I normally use Barrage, Savage shot, Distracting shot, throw dirt, Favorable winds, charm animal, comfort animal, res. I can never count the amount of times I feel like I am the only one interrupting the wurms. Throw dirt is just about invaluable in tombs, especially for saving your MM or monk and not end up dying to a flesh golem and fiends.

If im in TopK with my Ranger, then i use a flatbow, and can normally be at the Far backline.. Now, if the melee mob come to me, then it would have ran over the other players ye?.. I aint gonna try throw dirt then.. Ill just hit Whirling and Run like hell .. And, if im under the attack of ranged stuff like arrows (not so much in TopK), then whirling def will help vs the Arrows.. Throw dirt wont, becouse my ranger cant throw the dirt that long also, if i use throw dirt, then i allways end up throwing on one mob, and then secounds later another one come and kill me -.- >.<

We're talking about a skill to save your allies. Not to save your own hide. Just because your using a Flatbow doesn't mean you shouldn't be close enough to interrupt spells quickly and take the odd hit for the team if you need. When i did Tombs i can't remember the amount of times i ended up standing at the front tanking 3 Grasping Darkness w/ Physical Resistance, there was the time when i wasn't paying attention and decided to activate it while standing under 2 Meteor Showers... that ended quickly
