I started a Rt/R mainly because I liked spirit spamming and I hadn't a Ranger in one of my professions yet (yes, slander away)

I noticed the Earthbind Spirit and thought using it and a ranger trap to cause knockdown, which would allow full effect of flame trap (knock down for 3 seconds, which is how long flame trap lasts for)

Any ideas to expand on this?

i can imagine earthbind dying pretty fast if you knock down several foes, but it sounds interesting.

Earthbind takes a lot of beating before dying, even in thumper builds. I wouldn't be too worried about it.

If you are worried about Earthbind health, use Spirit Boon Strike in the Channeling too to give it some HP.

now that i think about it theres a new warrior skill that knocksdown everyone around him that with earthbind might be very effective in larger groups
