How do you get a different pet?

I haven't tried anything yet but just wandering?

you find a tamer, talk to them, and ask them 'are you interested in my pet' and then say 'yes i think its time to get a new companion' or something like that. the easiest way for me to put this is simply quoting guildwiki:
