Default New Ranger/Monk build. Very balanced

Heres my newest ranger build I have been playing for a long while now.

Attributes
Marksmenship: 12(+3)
Expertise: 11 (8+3)
Wilderness Survivlal: 8 (6+2)
Smite Prayer: 8

Skills
Judge's Insight
Barrage(elite)
Troll Ungeant
Res Chant
Savage Shot
Distracting Shot
Spear Of Light
Storm Chaser

Armor: Full Druid stat based armor is best suited. But almost any armor stat Ranger can use this build affectivlly.


The point of this build is to drill in damage with holy barrage which is most affective with a prefect sundering bow string for a total of 40%armor penetration. Troll Ungeant we all know as a ranger's best friend kinda like a Capital One card :P. Savage Shot and Distracting adds for notable interrupting when enemy monks began to heal themsleves. Sear of Light is a awsome spell that cost only a mere 5energy and can pack up to 70-80point of non reducable damage. Very good agasint Warriors and undead. Storm Chaser and Rebirth makes a Ranger a dead groups friends just because the ability to res at a distance and escape. On a scale from 1-10 how would you rate this little build.

why are you using 2 sup and 1 major, also sundering is 20/20 so it wouldn't be 40% armor penetration every time, every 5th attack you would be doing 40% ap. is it meant for a particular group build, or is it just a general r/mo that can be used during missions/quests/exploring?

Oh sorry forgot to split the +3 on expertise to 1+2+8. I know the percentge of the ap I was just simplifing it I should psot the full detail on that >_<. This build I use in PvE, PvP, AB, and farming. The only times I don't use it is when my Trapper build is needed which is usually for UW runs and the one protect the turtle quest for the luxons.

In that case why are you using 1 Sup and 2 Majors? Doesn't look all that balanced to me. Why would you be using Spear of Light if you have Barrage exactly?

As we all know, Sundering sucks, Vampiric mods are much better than them for damage.

I'd look into a couple of things.

First off, GWG has a great expertise chart here:

Since the game rounds percentages, there are 'break points' where you get additional benefit from expertise. The two that you should look at for a barrage build are 9 and 13. 11 expertise is not doing you any good beyond what 9 expertise would be doing. So either go up to 13, or drop it down to 9.

I would seriously consider droping troll ungent and Wilderness survival all together. That would free up points to use elsewhere, and you aren't brining an attribute line for one mediocore skill. Rather than try a self-heal, bring an evasion/block skill. You'll get more out of it in a jam.

I'd bring Rebirth instead of Res chant. Res Chant has half the range of a normal spell, so it will be difficult to rez someone that a mob is camping on. Rather I would take rebirth, much more effecitve in most situations, you'd be in. If you want a 'combat rez' then you need to take rez sig.

If you scrap Wilderness survival, take Dodge.

Lol if he drops Wilderness Survival completely its gonna look more and more like my Barrage build for FoW. Minus Spear of Light and Storm Chaser for obvious skills.

Hmm if I drop expertise to 9 I'd have a few skills to throw into wild. I would keep Spear Of Light because it will always do 70-80damage to a warrior attacking me compaired to barrage that will do anywhere for 20-40 depending on thier armor. The reason why I got two majors becuase the life minus was dropped to -35 So I add a Sup Vigor and I got almost perfect life mod on my bow so it keeps that going strong. If Rangers energy was better I'd drop Wild for Healing but it sadly isn't.

Far as rez chant I forgot to edit the post and fix that lunch came up.Xp I use rebirth for the same reason. Far as sundering I'll keep it you can have your vamp I like not have -1hp going on 24/7 that 1hp could be the difference between the battle going to the luxon or the kurzicks or just finishing the mission.

Whats wrong with switching weapon sets? You have 4 of them, its not like you have a vampiric bow on every single one. Aslong as you take it off between fights it makes no difference. The damage it does is much greater, considering elementalists now have 60 AL + 10 AL vs All elemenents + 15(is it 5?) AL vs 1 Element. Theres a good chance that element will be Fire too, as i know the Wurms do Fire damage with Wurm Seige, so i'd presume an ele in Fort Aspenwood or anywhere with Seige Turtles would have the same, not to mention it protects against Kindle Arrows.
As for Necros though, they have armour vs Piercing, monks can have either Ele or Phy.

Thats true. Some have a 15% always -1 health regeneration mod.

The rest have both.

5/10, nothing special about this build and poor equipment choices. What are you trying to be, a 55 ranger? No point in bringing a sundering bow in you're bringing judge's insight. If I remember correctly someone posted that for armor penetration guild wars will simply take the highest value and give you the benefit of that. So if this is true you can only get 20% armor penetration at best making sundering even more worthless than it already is. With your reconfigured rune setupt you'll be getting 110 health back, and you can replace the health mod on your bow for a 20% longer enchantment one which will add a couple extra seconds to Judge's Insight and save you some attribute points that can be used to raise Marksmanship to 16. Also I would take Smite Hex over Spear of Light. Judge's Insight is energy intensive enough, no reason to pack another spell that isn't affected by expertise.

Hmm the encanting mod sounds promising. But Spear Of Light only cost 5energy so don't see the point in dropping a high damage low costing spell. I could switch my mask for the 16 marksmenship. Besides if you are fighting an enemy with hexs like mesmers or necormancers it makes very little difference in the long run your just going be to using the thing over and over again what a waste. Maybe I could drop the sundering string for a Zealous string -1energy regen for a possibly +6 gain back with Barrage sounds pretty good.

I only use two weapons my bow and staff for two reasons. Never needed the extra two and never had the money for any other good weapons.

i see that build working in FOW,

and do yourself a favor, drop storm chaser and equip some "evading" stance like whirling defence. it wil come more usefull then runung skill

I have a question... why put the attribute points and energy into smiting prayers... the 10 energy for JI and the fact you need to keep recasting it... seems like a waste to me. Also.. as a barrage ranger you should have 16 points into marksmanship so if you want a little extra damage for barrage use favorable winds seeing its already chained to marksmanship. Then your arrows also move twice as fast... I think the energy your spending for the 20% AP is kind of a waste but its just my opinion. Give FW a try, I like it.

-Also.. I don't think your going to Need distracting shot... as an interupt its not the best. With a long activation time, well at least for an interupt I find Savage shot to be plenty.

-Also agree that Rebirth is better than Chant..which I think is a mistake in your build from what u said.

-Spear of light.... well my thoughts on this are the same as JI..Barrage only has a 1 sec recharge so spam it for damage. Shouldn't be wasting the points on smiting.. IMO

What would you be using it for in FoW though? A Barrage/pet team your missing the pet, and everyone hates people who don't bring there pet. And Spear of Light really wouldn't be much use. With an Order necro the damage you do is about 80ish to Warriors. With Judges Insight you can hit for 200+ damage regularly to Skeletons (if they don't have Life Bond).

Hmmm I'll try FW, If you looks at my edited post you would see I said i forogt to edit the ressing skill. Distracting shot becomeing a pain so I think I will dorp it and Strom Chaser for two defensive skill like "Lighting Reflexs" and "Whirling Defense". Spear Of Light has saved my hide from Warriors in both FoW, PVE, PvP and Alliance Battles it the only reason we won agasint this one tank that took 4 of us to beat O_o I'll switch my mask for the 16Marks. Once I get everythign tested next weekend I'll more then likly post it.

Thanks you all for the helpful ideas far as the two defensivskills, the new Barrage damage+, mask and the mod idea.
