Enter the Curse Ranger....
Profession: [Ranger/Necro]
Name: [Curse Ranger]
Type: [PvE/CompetitivePvP/GeneralPvP/]
Category: [Energy/Life Degen]
Attributes:
Curses 12
Expertise: 10+4
Wilderness Survival: 8+2
5 attribute pts left over
Skills Set :
Rez Sig
Troll Unguent
Whirling Defense
Throw Dirt
Lightning Reflexes
- added evasion
- 33% faster attacks
Faintheartedness
- for 29 secs, foe attacks 50% slower, -3 health degen
Malaise
- for 29 secs, -2 nrg degen to foe but -2 health degen for you
Wither {E}
- for 29 secs, - 4 health degen for foe and - 2 nrg degen for foe
*can substitute Plague Sending or Plague Touch
Summary: In the current Factions environment, most R/N are touch...this build surprises a lot of teams w/ it's potential -7 health and -4 nrg degen. Not too many foes are going to rush a R/N right now so you can cast your spells w/out too much difficulty. The build has 3 evades so you have to use them at your discretion. I'm using Vilnar's Staff right now:
nrg +15, cold dmg 11-22 (req 9 curses), halves casting time of curses spell (20% chance), reduces bleeding by 20%, and health +30
You could also use a bow of your choice and substitute Apply poison and/or Distracting Arrow for one or two of the curse spells.
Notes & Concerns: Effective against most casters and warriors...although anti hex spells will diminish it's effectiveness...since the curse spell Malaise gives you -2 health degen you may want to use troll unguent right after. Also, 29 secs is a long time..so you don't have to worry too much about nrg consumption especially w/ the expertise at 14....Enjoy! =D

You plan on killing opponents solely with -7 health regen? That will take 35 seconds to kill someone with 500 health, and that's against a target with no self healing AND no team mates who can heal him or her AND no hex removal. Sure you can surprise people who expect you to be a touch ranger, then they could probably laugh that you're easier than they thought.

Then you pretty much cease to be a 'curses' ranger and become a 'ranger' ranger.
Yeah, the idea of surprising people and having a way to reduce the energy of casters is nice, but the build has little power. Self-survival skills are using half your slots; that's an awful lot.

No, the intent was not to kill an opponent solely w/ -7 degen but w/ the aid of your teammates to put pressure via -4 nrg and -7 health degen on a foe. You'd be surprised how many warriors start running when their health and nrg are slipping away. I don't know of any builds that can be very effective w/out nrg. This build is just to show another versatile way a ranger can be used. Yes, a necro primary would be a better choice but expertise and the evades still make it a viable and formidable build.

Actually no, expertise is wasted in this build. It only applies on three skills with recharges of 45 seconds and 60 seconds. Sure it also applies to trolls but if you need to spam that, you're not contributing much to the team. Props for trying to think outside of the box but you have absolutely no skill synergies in the skill choices that you made. You would be better served putting degen on through poison/bleeding and taking energy away with debilitating shot, as in playing as a true ranger. As it has already been stated both of your energy degen skills will end with focus swapping, that is taking out the 12-17 energy granted by your wand and focus set for a shield and a -5 energy weapon ending your energy denial. Also that 7 bars of degen can be countered with a simple healing breeze. At which point you become a staff wielding ranger with defensive stances, definitely the scariest thing to go up against in PvP. Interesting build, but not viable or formidable.

if you wanted to maximize the benefits of a secondary necro in curse I think its only fair to state its not a ranger primary. only mesmer would make a secondary curse necro more eviller ;P
that being said I have run an FoC R/N with snaring juices effectively in TA.
using pin down, apply, read, parasitic, FoC, troll, whirling, and rez, but I have doubts as to the builds overall effectiveness in AB

PvE: Energy denial is not helpful as a general rule.
Competitive PvP: Focus swap>you.
General PvP: Maybe RA? You should try something a bit more... Rangerish?
