Rangers - A Guide to farming
A look at farming for us Ranger Primarys
By Druids Arrow
Introduction
After playing Guild Wars for nearly a year now, I see this problem occuring for up and coming Rangers. Unlike other professions Rangers aren't the best tanks, healers or nukers and not many people can understand the ways of the Ranger. I love to play the Ranger class, it is fun and very enjoyable both solo and group play, however, I see the same question time after time, how can I farm with my Ranger. This guide was produced to help rangers who are struggling to find a build they need and make money.
Armor
The armor you use is very important as it can be the difference between life and death. Typically you should be using Droknor's Forge armor as it provides the highest armor level. Normally Druids Armor is your best bet as the extra energy can be really handy, however, knowing that you would be fighting alot of oppenents that use Cold based attacks Frostbound Armor could be your best bet.
Equipment
Max Damage bows are a must, if you are struggling to find one then there are plenty of collectors around Tyria. Two bows minimum, these should be typically a Longbow, to pull monsters, and a shortbow to inflict damage. This guide focusses on the typical useage of a bow, however, there are other weapons rangers are capable of using.
Skill Combinations
There are 75 Ranger skills and 75 skills from your secondary profession. Surely you can come up with a few combinations, right? Well if not, here are a few that you might consider using:
Oath Shot {E} + Whirling Defence + Throw Dirt
With high expertise it is possible to maintain perminant Whilring Defence. This gives you perminant 75% Evasion and is extremly helpful in reducing the amount of healing you have to do. When whilring starts to flash you can use Throw Dirt to buy some time.
Greater Conflagation {E} + Elemental Resistance (Mesmer Skill)
This is a good combo, especially when wearing Drakescale Armor as it significantly reduces the amount of damage you take. You should be taking between 2-5 damage per hit.
A Simple Build - The Oath Trapper
The build I am about to give is a relatively simple build and anyone can do it, it is widely used and is quite effective. All you need is patience.
Atrributes:
Expertise 14 (12 + Minor Rune + Head Gear)
Wilderness Survival 11 (10 + Minor Rune)
Marksmanship 9 (8 + Minor Rune)
Superior Vigor Rune not needed but it helps
Skills
1. Oath Shot {E}
2. Whirling Defence
3. Throw Dirt
4. Barbed Trap
5. Flame Trap
6. Dust Trap
7. Point Blank Shot
8. Troll Unguent
Strategy -
Set up just a short while infront of a group of grawl. Lay Barbed Trap, Flame Trap, and Dust Trap. Repeat, if you want to overkill, by all means repeat again. Drop an item say 1 gold coin on the traps so you can remember where they are. Run in and pull a small group of say 4. Rune back to the traps and they should set off. Take out the Grawl that have been hit with Point Blank Shot. This should leave the Grawl Crones left. Do not set any traps now. The Crones will send the Conditions straight back with Plague Signet. Whirling Defence, and keep attacking, when Whirling begins to flash use Oath Shot. Whirling Defence again. When approximately 13-15 seconds of Whirling have been used use Troll Unguent so it will be in effect whilst Whirling Defence is down and Oath Shot is still recharging. Good Luck and happy Grawl slaying.
Conclusion
Well hope you liked reading it, expect more to come and Happy Farming.

Not in this instance, it is incredibily useful for taking all of them, however, not needed when taking small groups of 3-4

Then this build works pretty slow then .
If you are farming at the Port Sledge area, and aggro one grawl, he brings his whole family with him.
Whole family:10-15
Unless you are farming grawl someplace else...

Ok if I use the greater conflag and ele resistance build what can i use to kill crap loads of whatevers? And yes there is a point, what grawl are you farming? Port Sledge has big mobs of grawl and anywhere else, grawls are low leveled and with bad drops. COME ON GUYS IM POOR AND I NEED SOME CHAR TO FARM LOADS OF MONEY FOR ME! Lol and I don't wanna use the usual w/mo.............

I am farming outside Port Sledge, and I can pull groups of 3-4 instead of running head first into the great mob, you wait until a small group of Grawl seperates and you pull one of them. This usually takes 3-4 of them. This isn't designed to be the speediest way to kill grawl. It's just a little help for those struggling to find a build that will work for them, agreed it may be slow, but it is relaxing and fun nonetheless.
For the Greater Conflagation + Elemental resistance try Ettin Farming. Just use skills that would make sense, the only way to see if a build works is to try it not have someone try it for you

This is strikingly similar to Anu Bys's farming build, which he has been using since I can remember. Now I know Anu taught you a thing or two outside Sledge. So... methinks credit is in order Druid.

You could just bring Mantra of Flame, then you wouldn't need winter or elemental resistance.

yeah but then u'd still have some Ele's using Cold, Lightning, Chaos, etc dmg... GC {E} only turns all Phys Dmg into Fire... not the Ele dmg

Depending on whether you have Drakescale Armor or Frostbound Armor, the choice between Greater Congflagration and Winter is variable. I feel that a Winter + Mantra of Frost/Winter + Elemental Resistance combo is better than the Greater Conflagration counterpart; solely due to that one will still be able to use an elite slot.

My skill bar is sth like
Barbed Trap<-- a must
Dust Trap<-- a must
Flame Trap <-- a must
Troll Unugent <-- a must
Distracting Shot <-- Can be replaced with Winnowing or sth you like
Whirling Defence <-- a must
Mantra Of Resolve <-- a must
Serpeant's Quickness <-- can be replaced with Oath Shot // Spike Trap
I farm in Divinier's Ascent or outside Augury Rock (can't remember the name). Rockshots can be hard but you can get them if you place your traps correctly.

etting farming was DRASTICALLY nerfed recently...
oh and i dont think anybody noticed this yet, but here:
GC = all physical dmg is fire(which is elemental)
Winter = all elemental dmg is cold
bring frostbound armor, and you are set.

Yea but they were talking about farming Ettins...which generally speaking leave their Ele's at home.

Rather than using winter to turn it to cold damage...why not just use Drakescale for the same affect and saving a skill slot?

I was wondering just how rewarding Grawl actually are. Do they drop anything significant value wise? If so is it material sales or is it actually rare item drops?
