To OP: People would be able give more help and suggestions if you post up your current attribute point assignment and the skills you tend to use (and/or have available). Without knowing these and where you are in the game, assuming PvE, we can only take pot shots in the dark. And our suggestions maybe of little help to you.

it's hard to be able to give effective advice at this point, since we don't know what skills you have at your disposal. also, you will be levelling up pretty quickly.

at this point, the one thing to keep in mind is make sure that your weapon mastery attribute meets the req for your weapon. you can place the rest elsewhere. don't worry so much about it right now. just play through the game and learn as you go along.

well, like i said, you will be levelling up and learning more skills along the way. so, defining a build now would be next to pointless.

for example, sever artery + gash is a popular early game combo for sword users. however, when you reach kryta and fight undead, that combo will become useless as most undead do not bleed. part of having an effective build is tailoring it specific to the area you will be in and the enemies you will be facing.

given your current state, you don't have too many choices yet. sever, gash, and wild blow are your only possible sword attacks. "for great justice!" is a good utility skill. you can put the rest as healing skills and res sig, but your choices are very limited. there really is no point in setting a build in stone when you will still be learning more skills.

the best advice i can give to you is this:
play around with your skills. there is no better teacher than experience. try out a build and see what works. switch out skills that aren't helping or aren't being used. you still have a lot of the game to go through, and you shouldn't be afraid to change your build around on the fly based on the situation you are in.

make sure that you meet the req of your gear. for example, if your sword has a req of 5 swordsmanship, make sure your swordsmanship is at 5. same goes for your shield. then dump the rest into healing and strength.
