R/Me farming - tell meh it's possible!
Ok, what I find annoying is that when I search for R/Me farming, all I [mostly] hear are people saying that rangers can barely farm, if at all. I'm not going to start over just for money, especially when I'm nearing ascension. I'm a R/Me, marksman ranger, domination mesmer. Some expertise and wildy survival thrown in as well.
I'm lvl 19, but is it possible to farm anything at my level? I can successfully farm like one or two ettins right now, but that doesn't classify as "farming", does it?
Anyway, your reccomendations on R/Me farming areas, and don't give me any of that "jaja rangers r teh s*ck make a W/Mo like all teh other generic millionaires".

I farm solo with my ranger all the time. I rarely use secondary class abilities, instead focusing on pure ranger traits.
Superior Wilderness & Superior Expertise FTW.
Oh yeah, and Oath Shot is da bomb
Not to say that there aren't secondary skills I could benefit from, but I've been doing well enough as it is not to worry about it.

Lasher, do you mind telling me what you use to farm (skills, attributes...) and where you farm? I just want my friend who is a Ranger to play.

Can't you guess?
Traps.
Mostly anywhere with close-combat mobs.

Indeed, traps is the way to go for me at least.
My skillset is usually:
Distracting Shot
Whirling Defense
Dust Trap
Flame Trap
Barbed Trap
Apply Poison
Oath Shot
Troll Unguent
Let's say for example the trolls in the ice cave north of Droks. At the entrance is a nice choke point - I plant all my traps there, usually 3 of each. After planting 2 of each, wait for the flame & barbed traps to cycle, and plant them. While waiting for your last dust trap to cycle, hit apply poison, then plant the last (3rd) dust trap. Using a poisoner's longbow, I move into the cave, target closest, shoot, tab, shoot, etc. to get them all poisoned. Oh I also have a poisoner's halfmoon I switch to once the trolls get closer. When they get within melee range, hit whirling defense. Now, here's the important part - let all the trolls get to you, but do not let them surround and trap you. Once they are all within 10 feet of you or so, walk them back into your traps. If Whirling runs out and there are still trolls about, shoot one with Oath Shot and hit whirling again.
Once you've killed the big mob at the entrance, there is usually 1 or 2 more mobs inside, plus 2 mobs w/bosses to the left and right. I do the same technique for these mobs, however I usually drop a mountain troll tusk after I set my first round of traps, just so I know for sure where the traps are when things get hairy. For mobs of 3 trolls, you really only need 1-2 sets of traps.
As far as the bosses, there is Whuup Buumbul, whom you should know already, as he has Escape. He is the bigger pain in the ass of the 2 bosses here, mainly because he likes to hit escape and then immediately go for troll unguent, making it hard as hell to distracting shot. The warrior boss Krogg Shmush or something is a pushover - with traps, poison, and basically endless whirling defense, I've never had a problem with him.

R/Mes are really well suited to farm ennemies, and unlike many professions, they can farm ennemy casters (frost imps, hydras) like hell. One friend of mine use condition making build + fevered dream-fragility, and a mantra of [insert ennemy elemental damage here], and an armor suited with the correct defense.
Use winter/greater conflagration to take advantage of your armors.

Solo for a ranger is possible, some use ignite arrows and just spike things to death while they scatter around, others use traps.
Every farming location has its most efficient class, most areas with pure melee and no healing seem to be monk food, but places like ettins are next to impossible for a standard monk build as they self heal so you have to interrupt, or kill faster than they can heal.
Perhaps thats the solution to UW farming, give attaxes some form of healing sig, hardly a challenge for a full team, but for solo monk would be impossible.

It is indeed possible to farm as a Ranger/Mesmer without using traps as many people including myself tend to favour. Ettin farming for instance. Greater Conflagation + Drakescale Armor + Elemental Resistance = 2-5 Damage per hit, except from an Iresistable Blow which is around the 30 mark. Use Ignorance to prevent them using Healing Signet. Troll Unguent for when needed, a couple of running skills to get to the Ettins and a couple of attack skills and you should be good to go.

I hope thats sarcasm.
I was just thinking... A R/Me with greater conflag, winter, drakescale... and that one elemtal defence skill that r/mes have wouldl make them like invincible. But then again, they have to be able to do something right? Thoughts?

Kurow, nice thoughts, but I'm afraid I beat you to it. I made a post further up the page. There is not a need for winter unless you have Frostbound Armor. I personally use Drakescale so Greater Conflagation + Elemental Resistance works a charm. Add in Whirling Defence/Dryder's Defence you could be a mean evasion/damage reduction player.

my first post :)
ok, here's what I do to farm with my ranger at lvl 18:
Get to the desert as fast as you can, do all the quests you can there and get dust trap, flame trap and barbed trap.
Now get a nice good looking druids armor from droknar (in which case u can buy some of the skills noted above) or get a cool looking armor, if you go for the cool looking armor, make sure you get a staff or something that gives you more energy.
Another skill you will need is serpents quickness, to drop your traps faster, you can also see when the 90 seconds are over, because then your second serpentsquickness will nearly be reloaded again (45 seconds recharge time)
You will also need a superior expertis/wilderness survival rune, both if you can handle the -150 hp, I myself used the superior expertise. Then you need a cool mask take the expertise or wilderness one.
For attribute points: take at least 12 wilderness and 10 expertise, but I would advise you to get more expertise if you dont have druids armor and a staff, more wilderness is always welcome.
While trapping sometimes, enemies will come to you, and you may have a problem because you will be interrupted all the time then. The places where I advise you to trap are filled with melee mobs, so take Throw Dirt, the 10-15 seconds blind will give your dust trap enough time to reload. Then drop a barbed trap and run away faster than they can follow (yay crippled )
So now we have: Serpents Quickness (SQ) Barbed Trap (BT) Dust Trap (DT) Flame Trap (FT) Throw Dirt (TD) thats three skills to go. You can use those skills to adapt to the area u farm in.
I will explain the farming in 2 different areas: one for Ettin farming (getting valuable runes) one for minotaur/dune burrower farming (major xp, and desert keys/gold weapons from the burrowers)
Ettins: You can find them in north kryta, in the area between beetletun, bergen hotsprings, ascalon settlement. And if you have not done the farmers quest (where you can get the lost hog back) there are many ettins coming your way when u do it. If you do the quest, just die to the ettins, they will run to apoint close to where the hog was at start, they will stand there forever, until you lure them away (to your traps ofcourse)
If you have like 15 expertise and a druids armor/ nice staff you can keep dying until 60% dp, and still farm them with ease.
If you have already done that quest, just get someone to run to ascalon settlement for you (200 gp at most, tough many do it for free) or run there yourself (take troll unguent and dodge/stormchaser). Watchout for the avicara's tough and the lynxes can trigger your traps as well. From ascalon settlement go to the portal west of town, and walk north/west all the way, from beetletun keep walking east.
Ettins have this very annoying skill called irresistible blow. So blocking stances dont work well against them, TD is still very effective against them tough. You might want to have a running skill here, if they come to you before you have set enough traps. Another very annoying skill they have is healing signet, tough if you take your time trapping, you can kill them at once without them having a chance to use healing signet. Apply Poison works fine on them too, gives them even harder degeneration! If you are having trouble with strugglers, I suggest taking Troll unguent, Apply poison and Distracting shot.
Minotaurs: The best place to farm minotaurs is in the start of the Elona Reach mission (Elona reach is a mission post north of augury rock, people run there from augury rock all the time for 300-500 gp)
There are hordes of minotaurs and dune burrowers there! at the start there is a guy that gives you a crystal, just drop it, because you will not need it. Right at the beginning there are 2 minotaurs and a weird looking plant before it, avoid the plant because its a sort of mine, if you come close you get crippled and bleeded (minotaurs too, so if you sneak past it, the minos will trigger it and get slowed so you can get away safely)
You can come pretty close to the two minotaurs because they are not moving. Just put many traps there and let them attack you, you just stand on your traps (same for ettins btw) or stand a bit behind them. They will use endure pain to survive and then they will run back, because they run from the AoE (all around) damage of your FT and DT. Just continue trapping and the next time they come to you they die because their endure pain is over.
When they are dead it's time to go down, when you go down on the right, a minotaur will come towards you, just drop a DT FT BT and he will run away again, keep doing this untill he is dead.
When you are down, you will see many minotaurs run around, just look how far they run and make sure u stay far enough away (I stand next to the rocks where the two minotaurs were) Then start using SQ followed by all traps as usual. When you are ready, shoot an arrow at some minotaurs, and usually 3-5 will follow. Stand a bit in front of your traps and use a blocking stance like whirling defences or use throw dirt, when they are all attacking you, run towards your traps.
They are all clustered and will all run away, use this time to drop more traps!!!! They come to you again and they will die then. To kill these minotaurs faster I advise you to take apply poison. and just shoot around while your traps are reloading.
When you cleared all minotaurs you can see, u will have to go further and attack the dune burrowers. Use TD first immediately followed by Apply poison, then FT BT and DT last, so he will stay blinded. then proceed hitting him with a SHORTBOW/AXE/SWORD so he will not be able to finish his Healing springs. You will take some damage in the end but he will be dead before you are. Do this trick on the dune burrower at the wooden bridge. Do it at the next ones too. Then you will see minotaurs again, use the ghostly hero to aid you in that battle (drop 6-9 traps and lure them, saves time). Sometimes there is a chest there as well (to use your keys on).
So for minofarming go something like: DT FT BT SQ TD whirling defence apply poison and troll unguent. Use whirling defence whenever you go low. It will allow you to sneak some traps in which makes them run away for you to have time to do whatever you please (most likely drop moretraps and poison them
Now you will get a lot of minotaur horns... what to do with them?, well pretty easy, right outside Elona reach there is a collector. He gives MAX items for your horns, you can trade those easily, especially the bone staff and the firewand!
As you can see, this *guide was written for a Ranger/* the secondary proffession doesnt really matter, tough I used warrior for cyclone axe + apply poison.
I hope this guide is of any use to you. If I wasnt clear on something, please message me in game *mistical miss* or send me a private message on this forum. Excuse me for my English, im from Europe (holland).
Good Luck!
EDIT: aye, long text sorry for that ....
