Ettin farming with an ele isn't hard, especially with fire. Load up:
1. Elemental attunement
2. Fire attunement
3. Flame burst
4. Phoenix
5. Rodgorts Invocation
6. Inferno
7. meteor(for knockdown, if not dmg)
8. Aura of Restoration
due to the recharge times of all of those skills, you will never run out of skills to use, you will never run out of energy, and you will never die due to aura of restoration. Ettins don't hit hard as long as you hit hard back at em. Also, use meteor, instead of meteor shower, because ettins will run from meteor shower and make flame burst and inferno, the two hardest hitting/quickest spells useless.
All you have to do is make sure you keep up the enchants, or they'll smear you, and you'll have no energy. With the enchants, with lvl 15 energy storage, you should get 400% of the energy you spend turned into hp, and have 80% of energy returned to you, count in the 80 energy you have, and that there is one spell costing 25 energy, you will never run out of energy with the enchants on. Ettins don't strip them either, so you just have to have a high lvl of fire magic to make sure fire attunement is up all the time.
And ettins, btw, have dropped everything from stuff that sells for 12 gold up to sup vigor runes, and i always get one rare in each run, no exceptions to that to date. Even if it isnt a sup vigor, you might get a sup monk run, sup absorp, and if those dont come out, then you can sell it for 200+ gold and do it again. the run takes 10 minutes tops, if youre going slow and not trying to do it as fast as possible, and there is a route that allows you to hit up 2 bosses for morale boost just in case you need it. And, even if you dont care about the gold earned from the rare, then you can atleast be one step closer to the wisdom title right?

He probably meant Aura of Restoration
As for the claim in another post that Dual Attunements return 80% of the energy from Fire Magic spells -- that is strictly true only for the ones that cost 10 energy (because of rounding). But the return is well over 70% for everything except the 5 energy spells (Flare, Lava Arrows), on which the return is only 60%.
Also, I've done plenty of ettin runs without a gold. I've also gotten multiple golds on the same run.
Finally, ettin run discussions rarely make it clear where the ettins are. In fact, there are three groups of them.
A. Nebo Terrace. These are the first you see if you start at Beetletun.
B. North Kryta Province, near the pig. After killing the Beetletun ettins, stay all the way to the left, run past the tengu you'll eventually get to (still bearing left, so it usually isn't hard to avoid them at all) and zone into North Kryta Province. Bear right, and if you have the quest "The Last Hog", kick the pig. Then 8 ettins will eventually zone in after you; go back to meet them.
C. Head through Ascalon Settlement, and there are some ettins on the other side.
(Note to necros: The only way I can think of to kill North Kryta ettins as an MM is to start on the other side of the settlement, kill enough lynxes and/or mergoyles, and build your army that way. But I haven't tested it, and you'll have to keep them alive for quite a while afterwards if you want to go on and get the pig-related ones.)

I've read everybody's posts and I'm puzzled - I thought (rather was told) that ettin farming was no more- they nerfed the drop rate.
Can anybody support either argument with actual results, I'm too lazy to go out and try farming ettin again.

I start from Kryta and head through Scoundrels Rise into North Kryta Province. I've found the drops better in my case, as from Beetletun i rarely got good drops. That means I have to kill a dozen level 12 Mergoyles first and 2 level 11 bog scalels though, but once through them I just run to the portal. I head to the beach, stay on the bluff, fight or avoid the mergoyles and bogs. I'll usually hit 8 or more ettins heading into Ascalon Settlement. Once they are gone, I'll head to Nebo Terrace, zone out and zone back in. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Drops are up and down. I've had seveal runs with only white ettin pauldrones and then gotten 2 golds and 4 purples on the next run. But here is the rub - runes other than the superior vigor have dropped in price. You used to get 8K for monk runes, and a superior absorption was 70k. All can be bought for under 3k each now.
However, the price for tanned hide squares (which aren't really square now, are they) has gone up to close to 200g per 10 at the merchant so those white pauldrons can be worth 1k or more. On a pretry poor 4 pass run I got 1 sup sword, 4 major blah, 40 tanned hides, 3 leather squares, blue dye, a couple purple non-max weapons, an 20/18 sundering bow, and a bunch of other crap. Took me about an hour, so not great, but good fun.
If you go, I wish you good hunting.
