Super Noob
I just bought both Prophecies and Factions today (I'm off of WoW for awhile) and the sheer number of posibilities has overwhelmed me, as far as character building is concerned. I'm not asking for a step by step guide (go here, level to this, put your points here) but if someone could tell me a good class combo for a new person trying to acclimated to the game, I'd be very grateful.

Warrior/monk is a typical easy build for starters. Also if you like support monk/anything just about can work. If you like doing more damage with your support Necromancers either going for minions or Spiteful Spirit help a lot and are usually what everyone looks for in groups. Normal groups go with like 2 tank warriors, 1-2 monks or 1 monk 1 protective ritualist, the rest are pretty much damage dealers, elementalist nukers, SS necromancers.
Rangers are also a decent starter class by being able to do interrupts and damage at a distance, but are not as easy to get into most groups.
For the most part at the moment rangers, mesmers and assassins are the 3 main classes that have problems finding groups. But you can still get into the game easily with most of them, mesmer is harder to learn to play imo.
I just say for a starter character for just a while try w/mo get the hang of things, if you like support make the monk and then you can delete the w/mo later if you want or keep him for farming/ running later on. Then once you get the hang of it all you can make whatever characters interest you.

You'd probably want to start off in Prophecies first, just so you get the hang of things and the beginning area of Prophecies is always a nice sight. Most of the classes are decent but mesmers aren't exactly a pve class I would think.. and one of the more difficult classes to use. Beginner classes, as other people have said, would be the warrior. Also, in the beginning area of Prophecies, you can test out which secondary profession you want so it's cool.. Necromancers are fun when you control minions if you like that sort of stuff.. Elementalists for the nukes.. Rangers for the pets.. Monks are always a nice addition to a party if you like doing that sorta stuff.
Here is what I would rate noob-friendly professions (easiest to use) in order:
Warrior, Elementalist, Necromancer, Ranger/Monk, Mesmer

I pretty much agree with MrScaRay said.
Start off with Prophecies, the tutorial in Factions is better, but after the tutorial, everything comes hard and fast. Prohpecies isn't as good with its full view learning, but it does allow you to explore vast areas and take your time (time is of the essence in Factions). Factions can level you up in hours, Prophecies can level you up to 20 (max in both areas) in days.
Easiest to learn:
Warrior
Monk
Elementalist
Necromancer
Ranger
Mesmer
Don't be fooled though, they may be easy to learn, but each class can take a very long time to truly master.
The easiest way to get into groups are:
Monk
Elementalist
Warrior
Necromancer
Ranger
Mesmer (almost never gets an invite, )
Hope you enjoy the game.

Warrior might be easiest, but it's also more clear if you have an utter noob warrior in your midst. Why don't you try it on your own? It can never hurt. In Guild Wars, you cannot make a mistake in building your character.

I agree with pretty much everyone here, they make some good points.
I highly recommend playing through the storyline of prophecies before moving on to factions. My first char was a ranger, which I liked a lot more than warrior, only because I have a thing against warriors. My current favorite is monk, but I think to play a monk well, you should get to know the dynamics of the game first. I recommend warrior or ranger for sure. They're very basic ideas that you don't have to have played GW to understand. Most rpg's have a warrior and ranger class (although probably named differently) so you'll already have an idea of what you're supposed to be doing. With classes like the mesmer or ritualist, just the class itself is confusing enough, which would be overwhelming if you're still learning the basic fundamentals of GW.

Hey...I don't think it is legal to use keygenerators...iirc it's against the law, because in a way you are "stealing keys" from ANet. Someone take it off please. It wasn't a wise idea to post the link and say that anyways.
EDIT: Someone took it off while I was typing...nevermind.
