If I can are there any restrictions on what spells can be cast on the spirits?
And if I can't directly cast on them would the heal area spells still heal the spirits since it targets all creatures in the area?
It seems like I should be able to cast spells on the spirits because in some situations it would make more sense to keep a key spirit alive for the whole parties sake rather than casting a single heal on 1 party member. But anyway I would appreciate it if anyone can answer these questions.

I never tried to heal a spirit with monk skills, so I don't know. I do believe Heal Area will work with spirits, but heal party will not.
You cannot hex a spirit, nor can you cast Life Siphon (and Suffering will not work either - even cast to adjacent enemy).
Spirit Boon Strike (Channeling - Ritualist) heals spirits near you.
All spells that directly affect spirits (spirt to flesh for example) affects spirits.
I'm sure you cannot cast mending or shield of regeneration on a spirit.
Don't forget, even at full health, there is a time limit for spirits, so once time is up, your spirit is gone.
