General opinion on the boards is that the + energy 'druids' set is the best all around armor. Alot of them have situational uses, but if you were planning on buying only one set of armor, than that's the one I would get. In cantha you can get any skin with the stats you want, so which ever skin you decide on, you can get the +energy stats.

Well, there's only one set in Tyria that has the 'druids' stats, and thats Druids armor. So if you don't like how Druid's looks, then I would go to cantha and pick a skin I like there.
You can look at all the Amor skins here. Hopefully that will help you decide!

Druids is definetely the way to go. The extra energy will come in handy I guarantee. If you are using more high end energy cost skills or spam a lot of skills druids is what you are looking for. The other amors stats imo don't match the druids.

There is no single best armor, unfotunately. The elemental armors have a use, under specific conditions or builds, think Winter and (Greater) Conflagration.
All armors have only situational use, including Druids which is frequently used and often named as The Best ranger armor. It's not. The 7 energy extra buffer is only a skill or two and will not help in a longer lasting fight. The only real use I see for the extra buffer is when using energy reclaiming skills such as Markman's Wager or Ferocious Strike. But Druids is still a good choice, never entirely useless, but not neccesarily the most usefull in all situations either.
Cantha offers some other interesting options, +10AL when using a preparation, which many rangers frequently do. Or +10 AL when using a stance, could be usefull for a TF/Flurry user, or when you're in trouble and using a defensive stance. And there is the +35HP version, could be nice if you're using a couple of major and superior runes.
It really depends on your use. Sorry.

It could be the difference of using seven skills at 3 energy each, rather than seven skills at 2 energy each. The extra buffer allows for a smaller investment in expertise.
The addtional armor sets are nice if you are sitting on the front lines, but I'm not prone to taking much direct physical damage, and my armor is already buffed against elemental no matter what set I'm using. So unless you are taking damage your +armor set is doing nothing for you. I do use the stance set when I'm playing a Thumper, but I think that its much to conditional for an 'all the time' set.
I agree that the + health set has its uses, but for different reasons. Its much more effective than +armor versus degen and armor ignoring attacks. And I think it's useful as a switch set to use as a counter to DP. But again, I think its wide range everyday uses are limited, and it'd be better as a second set than a single everyday armor.
You are right in saying that every armor has it's uses, and I guess that it would be optimal to have one set for every situation... But I still believe that the most you will get out of a single armor set is the Druids +energy set.

I'd tend to agree, simply getting Druids will probably get you the most usefull of the armor variations, with less headaches about which one would be the best. It's also the cheapest in materials, hides and wood.

I got druid's because I was like omgtrenchcoatmustlookleet. Then after I bought fissure druid's I'm like, I need more trenchcoats! And got a krytan sentry set for running/thumping.
But yeah, the +8 energy on druids is unbelievably helpful, many times in your GW life you'll be almost out of energy, the monster aggro went terribly wrong, and the bladed aatxe is looking at you. They do like 280sh in 1 hit, but luckily you chose the stylish armor and got 1.5k druids and you bust out the whirling defense(which you have energy to use). Terrible example, but come on, trenchcoats look sexy.
Until you have the money to start affording multiple armors(and the damn multiple sup vigs), I'd just stick with druid's. Druid's has probably guided a good percentage of the rangers to the end of the game, at least it did to me. Never really needed frostbound(shiverpeaks)/drakescale(rof)/studded(no idea, maybe glint's mission?)

Major Vigor is about 1/10 the price of a Superior, and it's only a 9 HP difference. You can always upgrade later. For the attribute runes, the Major versions are very cheap, and two major's cost less HP then one superior.
Oh, and a tip, maybe, I put Vigors on my mask(s) ... actually I have fixed the 'postion' for each specific rune, eg, expertise on my vest, this makes it easier to play around with builds, or swap out a pice of armor.
