any minionmaster that isnt a necro primary is pretty much pointless and very complicated to do. the necro gains energy from soul reaping, which you dont get from a monk. so therefore when your minions die, you dont recieve the benefits of minions/spirits/enemies dying to help gain your energy in order to keep up minions.
it can be done, a guildie goofed off with a fast cast minionmaster the other day and was able to keep up around 6-7 minions constantly, but it relied on having another necro with blood is power or blood ritual to help him manage his energy, even with offering as his elite.

Without Soul Reaping, you will find it very tough to maintain an army (as you have no energy management).
Since you cannot have an Necro Runes, you'll find it somewhat tough to keep a good bunch of minions around (only upto level 12 death magic). Offering of Blood is your best way of getting energy (without relying on another necro). Some people I think have done this with some success (using points into Divine Favor and Healing Touch - for self healing).
A Ritualist/N is better for MMing than a Monk, but I don't know if you like a ritualist's look though.
I like my female Necro, she is a bit pale with nice cat eyes. Her outfit is very fetching, not like my Monk. She looks like someone with baggy robes.
Monks do dance better though.

How do you feel about a Mesmer?
If you like the looks of a mesmer, then be a MM. Mesmers are awesome when it comes to energy management.
Lets face it, don't blame ANet/NC Soft/GW for the looks of the Necro. Since when do you think a Necro is supposed to look handsome and dashing and fit? They are supposed to be pale, withered, frail looking and perhaps wrinkley. They study death and sickness.
Monks are supposed to look nice and fresh, like that out of the dentist office fresh. Mend Ailment can get rid of that tarter build up quickly.
If you don't like the look of Necro, hide the looks. Get a pumpkin helm, or if you had your necro, get the dragon mask.

I'm not sure it was stated firmly enough, but having only 12 death compared to 16 hurts a lot and means fewer minions of lesser power and health.
If you want to be an MM, pick necro primary. If you don't like the looks of the males, pick a female, that's what I did.
Trying to mix almost anything with the role of the healer is a bad thing. Focus on the team and keeping them alive and don't spend your time and energy on other things - including offensive spells. Three seconds casting a 15 energy spell can mean the ruin of the team.

Monks heal and protect they don't play MM go play a Necro and if you want me opinion go change to a /mes so you can play Monk or another secondary as /N is /N is pretty much useless.

bottom line, looks only go so far....a 16 death goes a lot further...

Well indeed ritualist is the only non necro class who can make decent MM. Boon of creation will replace soul reaping, and their minions will have a lower lvl but they will have more health (thanks to spawning power).
However, as everybody, I recommand necros for MM.
