I havent played this game that long but from what I have seen W/Mo are the most common build and they are everywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everytime I go on observe mode theres atleast one of them in each team if not the whole team is made of them with maybe one dervish or paragon + an E/Mo. Its also crazy in PVE almsot erveryv single person I see in a town expecially in the early on parts are W/Mo they are the only class oyu alwatys have in a party and if not one the whole party apart from oyu is made up of W/Mo, probably because they are tanks. I think thpugh that assasins in the right hands could be very good along with ritualist but it would take experimentation. In the early bit when I played with an assasin you could usually kill anyone in a few seconds.

First, they don't get invited into any group, unless by mistake.
Second, both of those professions work. They work so well, that those that play them do not humiliate themselves with joining unwashed masses that are PUGs, but simple breeze through the game with heroes, not even breaking a sweat.
Many very experienced players play Ritualists and Mesmers, and they simply find the game easier and faster with hero/hench. Main reason for this is that both of these classes require different group dynamics. An offensive spirit ritualist is a one person spiking machine. A mesmer can tear spiking casters apart before an ele finishes casting MS. They can also kill a dervish in two seconds, before melee even runs into range. But both require completely different agro management, and different combat flow.
So, simply put, it's not worth trying to get into PUGs, or even advertise your presence. Simply play without hassle.
But they aren't rare. Just subtle.

played my mesmer and Rt though nightfall before any othre character and thats exactly what i did
offensive spirits and ineptitude mesmer's work wanders there.
these are the finnish times i got on ruins of morah with those profs:
Rt: 5.05
Mesmer : 4.24
my mesmer also got abbadon in under 7 minutes (had a very unusual hero setup with, E/N using soul barbs and master of magic)

since when are any W/Mos in high level pvp? fear me warriors could be W/Mo, but they never make it past broken tower.

Since the introduction of Mending Touch, giving them a powerful self-condition removal.
Least played : Generally Rits.

So why not a rit/paragon or vice versa? a useful buff/support character there.
I see fewer assassins than anything else, rits close second. Then mesmers.
I know rits and mesmers are unspectacular, though all my heroes are secondary mes due to their inhuman interrupt ability (power drain ftw).
Personally it was funny (and not very clever) how much I aggro'd with my mesmer in pve in shiverpeaks due to dom magic.
To comment on mes can't tank, heal or do AoE, nope, that's right, but shutting down enemy monks and casters in just a few seconds with anything from diversion, disabling elites, backfire etc. etc. can dramatically reduce their pressure and healing on the party. Making everyone's life easier. Whoever said that stuff, go on guildwiki, look at mes spells, and look on their forum. Then think for 5 minutes.
At the top of it all, I think you have to play a class to understand what it can bring, so after playing a monk almost all the time, I always ask questions about the monk's builds in pugs because I can talk to them about how they plan to contribute to team from a position of knowledge.
The spellcast timing challenges of a mesmer and the way it's skills can combo, coupled with the 'not very flashy and in your face' way the spells affect enemies make them hard to admire for people who need some hollywood from their game.
I've played mes for ages and still feel rubbish, something which, apparently unlike many players, motivates all the more to get better at it. Like good monking, it's hard.
I've got a level 12 rit, so i'll get back to you, so far the battles appear to be over before spirits land because the aggroers aren't taking time to prepare for each encounter. I thus am just applying some healing to them. Seems daft given I got spirits that can interrupt and blind enemies, but perhaps they don't know that
