yes, it will be dire if it was below lvl 15 when you started.
just clear the area, send everyone away except you and a monk hero.
disable all the monks skill except rez and set him to passive.
then take off your armor and start casting charm animal(but cancel it!) then go away for a few hours and once your pet reached a level you are satisfied with(above 15), but your armor on and re-enable your hero's skills then charm the animal.
thats how i got my red dire crab. and im not telling you where to get a red one

You have to type in "/petname" to see the Dire prefix. It should tell you that your pet's name has been reset.

It actually takes less time to just take the pet out and kill minotaurs/mergoyles and then use either the r/mo pet bonder in Elona or just killing outcasts outside of Leviathan Pits than by death levelling in my opinion primarily due to attack skills...

Maybe, but it's just so much easier to get this going and going away to work/school/sleep and when you come back, you get a brand new pet and saved around 2 hours of your life instead of leveling your pet normally.

In that case, your doing it wrong.
I did it with a Melandrus Stalker and a Crocodile for my heros. Went out as a normal team would. Slaughtered stuff, cleared mobs from around the pet. Sent them all off. Turned the 2 rangers to passive (probably of been quicker to bring Norgu for fast cast). Turn off all skills but Ressurect and Unguent. Take all armour off cept my mask n boots (they have sups)... put my Elsywths Bow on (only vamp i had at the time... would've been better without the +30 health). Ressed at 60dp with 18 health and 1 degen... took 1 hit to kill me from the pet. Once it hit level 20, charm it. Can get around 1 death every 10-15 seconds... need about 300 deaths. Maybe takes an hour to get a lvl20 Dire pet from a lvl5 pet.
There names don't change... but the moment you charm it it appears as a 'Dire *pet type*'.
Theres just 1 thing i don't get.
At lvl20 the Melandru's Stalker hit me for ~30 damage... at lvl20 the Crocodile did over twice that.

oh, yup, I was doing it wrong. see the 2 sup runes is where i was straying... anyways, I think I'll always prefer 'live levelling' a new pet, kinda like getting used to a new apartment. It's just something I wanna take some time and check it out.
But that kitty vs lizard thing? wierd, I bet once you charm them they do the same damage to armor dummies... only thing I can think of is the 'wild' stalker is hearty and the 'wild' croc is dire.

When I leveled my Hyena, before charming it, it was generally doing damage in the same range as your Stalker, except for the times when it would crit. Its strange indeed that the croc would hit for more.
I used Koss as my Rez because of his higher armor. I didn't want to have to worry about him being killed. The problem with Koss was that toward the end I had to worry about his energy for the rez because I was dying too fast. In all it took just under an hour for the Hyena to go from lvl 5 to lvl 20.

Noob question here: Can I make my pet a "Dire" pet if it's level 13 now? And does it matter anyway?

Sure, but only if its already aggressive, the pet guide in community works has lotsa pointers. If (likely) your pet is level 13 and 'playful' the only possible range of outcomes is Hearty, Playful or Elder.

malko, you should wait for him to level to 15-17 just in case. It doesn't take that long, just take your armor off, flag dunkoro to use ressurect when you die and he should be killing you once every 10 seconds or so.
ps: Just got a dire crocodile ^_^

Ah ok I answered my own question. Anyway I am doing it now. Having Koss to ressurrect me. Its quite funny seeing Koss running away when being hit.
Anyway, think of this like a ranger ritual or something. Some kind of pet bonding on the extreme kind. Well, thats my reason anyway ... :P
