What worked for your PvE sin?
First, I need to give some backstory...
Me (Assassin/Monk) and my friend (Necromancer/Mesmer) completed the island part of Factions whitout that big of problems. We decided to skip the 55 armor and save the money and materials for when we arrived in Kaineng Center.
Due to a wrong information, we ended up walking around on the Marketplace at lvl 17 instead of running South to Kaineng. We -did- complete all of the Marketplace quest mainly because my friend went Minion Master.
Still, being a Assassin wearing 2 major runes (-70 hp) and using a 30 defence armor isn't fun. Melee killed me, ranged killed me, hexes killed me and there is my personal favorite, Soul Explosion.
There was a instance which me (and my friend) were hit by a 400 damage Lighting Hammer which made us laugh and ponder if the enemy wasn't bugged. Remenber friends, high level bosses + armor penetration spells + low armor = Good times.
So, after finally reaching Kaineng, getting acess to the lvl 20 armor and all skills I wanted, I decided I would survive as a Assassin.
I for long wanted to use Critical Defenses to survive on melee, but soon found the window of oportunity to land a critical was low. A cripple, a blind or enchantament removal was all needed to finish my protection.
What really helped me was, indirectly, [wiki]Shroud of Distress[/wiki]. I say indirectly because I pondered to Shroud works, I need lots of HP so the half HP gap needed to be high.
So I made sure to have a venerable HP poll, and -that- was which really helped. Not because Shroud of Distress and not because now I can stand more punishment but just because when you have more HP, the AI target you less.
When the enemy shows me it ugly face to me, Shroud and a large HP poll made me survive long enough to the healers throw some love. But being target isn't common to start.
So, after playing with many builds, trying many spells, exploiting the AI targeting was what really worked. :P

Sins are really only valuable in PVP, like mesmers. I'd just delete it.

Meh, simply not being the first one into combat works fine for me. Enemies are rather trigger happy, totally lacking in finesse. They'll waste their salvo of nasty spells on the mending wammo, then I can dive in, do my thang, kite a bit, and do my thang again. If the sh*t hits the fan, there's always [skill]Death's Retreat[/skill]

nah SIns have Potential that makes them awsome melee Fighters if used Correctly and they can solo most places that other Professions can't do like Tombs with use of ShadowForm.

Well, my friend is the polar opposite of me this time. He have a Minion Master which is worth almost a army on itself.
Compared with him, I can't stop and think I am a just a notch better then a henchman and sometimes, the healer does a better job then me.
However, I don't have plans of building a "career" or GW. I don't plan to run the Fissure of WoE or things like that. We play for fun and for that, Assassins works just fine.
I think it's somehow assassins are seen as a bad class on PvE because the "good" PvE classes are forced to stick on a specific build. As an assassin people expect nothing.
