Default Effective Monk - How to?

Well, in going on with my thread over in the Necromancer subforum, I've decided that I am going to attempt to play my Necromancer and my Monk through the game at the same time, something I've never done. I'm usually the one who plays one all the way through, then move onto another.

But! With the information of Chapter Four coming out very soon, I've not got much time left before the newest game comes out now do I?

So, here is the lowdown. I recently got my Mesmer through the game, played a degeneration mesmer most of it, and none the less didn't get many people wanting me (surprise, surprise, surprise...) in their group. But, I've noticed a lack of Monks in this game.

Now, Vierita Freit, my monk, was created in the Nightfall Campaign (but, is actually from Tyria....aha!) so she is limited to what she can and can not do with Elites. Now, mentioning my Mesmer again, I did play a hex remover several times over and I usually am paying attention to my parties health anyways.

I still don't know what the best type of armor/insignia's are, the best type of weapons and just the over all how-to-play a monk in general. So any help from everyone would be much appreicated as I really am seeking to get her through this campaign (and eventually, like my necromancer, through the other two!) before Chapter Four (or whatever they are doing...) come outs!

Once more to the Guru Members, many thanks for any help!

Considering how broad your inquery is may i suggest you do some forum reading.

Easy answer: There are many types of Monk builds you could select from. Which in turn reflects many types of Armor/Insignias that would best compliment those builds, and many types of energy/weapon sets that would also be complimentary.

Personally, I would create a build Heal build that centered around healer's boon or a prot build that centered around Zealous Benediction.

Here's some monk fundementals for you:

1. Make certain to have atleast 3 weapon sets:

a)High energy (for emergency).
b)low energy (for hiding energy).
c)normal set (for typical scenarios).

2. Certain to have at the very least:

a)good armor buff on chest & legs.
b)Health or energy buff on arms/feet (optional).

3. Skills:
a)Make certain to have emanagement skills.
b)Make certain that the bulk of my skills were 5e cost.
c)Bring a condition & hex removal whenever possible.

4. Do not rely soley on watching the red bars go up and down. Be proactive as much as possible.

Excellent!

Many thanks, and I always read over the thread. But this was a more of an idea to get a collective going in one spot should someone find themselves in the position I am in at the moment.

prevent damage rather than outhealing it - as much as possible. everyone will be forced to heal, just make sure you dont overheal.

adapt to the situations - know the missions. if you know theres many conditions, try going RC, if theres many hexes, go Divert Hexes, if theres lots of degen and pressure, try LOD, etc.

also, let idiots die. dont burn your energy on them which will result in the rest of the team dying. if you see someone not doing what you want, point it out to them, if they still dont follow, try to not bother with them. only keep them alive if your energy pool allows.

some very good points alrdy pointed out, but id take armor over health and energey all times, becuase with armor u prevent damage, say a round 100 dam hits u with health/energy mods u get hit for 100 so u have to heal for 100, but with armor u coudl limit it doen to 86dam odd, meaning less energy to heal for so more energy efficent and keeps u alive for longer. also dont over heal, w8 til lthere at 70-75% hp b4 acting, top up bars with sigs not spells and dont watch the party menu it deicides bad monsk form the good ones.

I love the common thinking people have.

Monks think prevent damage, go protect. The others say, don't bring self-heal, let the monks heal you.

In the end, no one gets healed.

Personally, I love healing, but I also believe in mitigate the damage, rather than heal over it. Bring a hybrid.

Don't think you can heal everyone all the time. If someone runs out and aggros too much, then they spam "HEAL ME!!!" over and over again, let them die. If they can't be intelligent on their strategy (if they have one), then they don't have any right to demand things from you. I've seen a warrior run off and aggro a set of monsters. The rest of the party went a different route. The warrior just kept on fighting. Silly.

Don't take the blame for the party's misfortune, unless you go afk and not tell anyone. Remember, you are the last and best hope for a party, keep yourself alive. And bring Rebirth.

Sure there is. And why not worry about it? You can only be great at this game if your willing to venture into all corners. Me, I won't touch a Ranger, Paragon, Warrior or Assassin, I tend to those who favor a bit of Spell in their life.

Seriously..such a silly question with someone who has as many post as you do Age.

I appreciate the help, and mainly the "Let Them Die!" suggestion. That's something I would have considered, but now with more convincing I would be willing to do.

So don't over heal, and/or negate as much damage as possible...interesting interesting.

What about the weaponry then?

If I need energy, I usually have a prot icon with +30 hp and 12 energy. Normally I'll be using a +30 hp shield though. If I'm playing prot I usually bring an axe with +5 energy and +20% enchanting. If that doesn't matter then it's an axe with +30hp instead of enchanting.

For armor general use (I mainly play fow in pve, so we're nearly always bonded) I have the +10 AL enchanted armor. However, consider getting some +hp or +AL vs physical/elemental. The energy armor is kinda useless - if you do your job right (and provided someone doesn't aggro the universe), there won't be energy problems.

Like the others, I also recommend playing mostly prot. You can bring a couple of heals if you're supposed to be healer, but honestly it's so much easier with prot skills that can counter far, far more damage than you could ever heal through. Also, prot enchants have some excellent synergy with Dwayna's Kiss, one of the best healing skills.

Assuming this is for PvE, your weapon sets won't be hard to collect... It depends on how much time/money you're willing to spend. *Honestly you'd be fine with a 20%HCT +30hp/+5AL staff for healing and prot for the vast majority of the game.* If you want to go the next level, here's something like what you'll need...
1st set: +5 energy +20%/+30hp/+5AL sword/axe/spear and either a 20/20 or 20/+30hp focus for healing and prot. This would be your normal set.
2nd set: +15/-1 wand and +15/-1 offhand. You only need to meet the req on the offhand, I use an elementalist's fire wand on my monk. Use this as an emergency set, but be careful not to die in it.
3rd set: -5 energy sword with suffix of your choice and a shield with mods of your choice. This is your low energy/defensive set. There won't be many areas of the game where you face edenial in PvE, but if you do you'll be prepared with this set.

You can mix and match them to some extent. I have my monk personally set up like this:
1) +5E +30hp sword and +30hp shield
2) -5E spear and Forgotten Fan for optimal low energy set
3) +15/-1 fire wand a +15/-1 divine favor focus
4) 10% HSR and 10% HCT all skills wand (Ziinfaun's Belief) and 10% HSR all skills +30hp focus (Byzzr's Benediction)

Hope that helped a little.

I wrote a brief monk guide sometime ago. It has links to other monk guides/discussions and links to weapon collectors.

At least he didn't bring the aggro back to you guys... <<

Oh right... back on topic... As has been said over and over, learn to manage your energy well and you'll do great. I haven't PvEed for ages but I would suggest getting armor that boosts your health and, well, armor. Leave it to your weapons and runes to boost your energy, et cetera et cetera. Nothing much else I can suggest since I'm not sure what mode you most prefer to play.

Eh... wasn't much help was I? xP

Try not to be predictable...wait, that's for PvP.

Well, I guess, learn your skills and what they do, and be able to do it instinctively. That's how I do it, anyway. And don't stop once you've decided on monking; I stopped playing for 3-4 weeks and I suddenly sucked at Guild Wars.

your best bet will be a sort of hybrid. something around this:
Reversal of Fortune
Shield of Absorption
Protective Spirit
Zealous Benediction
Gift of Health
non elite energy management of choice
Mend Condition/hex removal of choice
Ressurection Chant

Kephket's Refuge is an excellent weapon choice for this build, however whichever Prot based weapon you preffer, hopefuly with 20% enchanting mod
also bring high and low energy sets

I would use Dismiss Condition instead of Mend Condition.
