actually, u are not wrong. if he is damaged by anything else, he will not drop. thats why he has done 30 runs and only gotten shield once. i started farming this w/ my 55 monk and within 2 hours, i have collected 5 shields. I basically run around rit boss and run straight to strongroot. if he is going to drop the shield, you will see it in his left hand. he has always dropped when i seen the shield except when he had been damaged by other creatures. if he doesnt have shield, i just die and rezone. below is a pic of him holding shield. second attachment is me w/ all 5 shields for the non believers

dang i don't remember seeing him holding the shield ever...must be why i only got 1 from all those dang kills

This is incorrect. I just went out there with the intent of killing the afflicted mob, and the rit construct, then on to Strongroot's mob. I pulled the Rit boss and was working on him and the damn afflicted started brawling with Strongroot's mob.
I thought I was screwed, but since Strongroot had his shield in his left hand, I figured what the hey. And I am happy to say that I am now the proud owner of Strongroot's Shelter. I do not know if him actually holding it was the deciding factor, and I do not intend to test this out. If anyone knows, then by all means, please post here.
Also: Does anyone know if greens will only 100% chance drop if the boss is actually holding them? I'm pretty sure I have gotten greens when the bosses are not. But is seems like if they are holding them, then it will drop.

From my experiences in farming Wing and Strongroot, the bosses will only drop their green when they are holding the item. However, just because they are holding it does not guarrantee a drop. I've had cases where they have been holding it, but drop nothing. Once, Wing was holding his axe, but dropped a rare Mammoth Axe instead.

However, I haven't had a single occurance where they dropped the green without holding it.

wrong i just did it and on my 5th run he had it but he did not drop it
and yes i was solo no hencies nothing and no other enemy attacked him

wait i take that back he was holding a different skinned shield but still he did not drop that shield eitehr back to farming for me

I must be a lucky boy.... Strongroot's Shelter dropped for me while I played my mesmer across in a full party of henchs

It seems it's true. In about 5 runs he wasn't wielding it and it didn't drop.
Next time, he wielded it and it dropped. Ok, it isn't 100% sure but let's say it's like that in 90% of the cases
