Default Jack of All Trades vs Specific Purpose Builds

What side are you on?

Myself, I feel a build should have one or two purposes and do them well. Add more objectives and the skills used to achieve them aren't as powerful or efficent.

Jack of All Trades builds can be good in certain situations however.

But I have to say I'm for specific purpose(s) build(s).

Your thoughts...

go with specific purpose builds if you trust your team, otherwise you'd fit perfectly with a jack of All Trades, a guy who has to be self reliant or is a solo player.

I agree with Terra Xin. I play a specific build if I know what the plan is in the group. Otherwise, I play a jack-of-all-trades.

I just take whatever seems appropriate for the expected enemies(PvE). If Im in the Shiverpeaks, I dont use Water magic with an ele, Id use Fire, maybe some Air for Blind. If expecting to face alot of enemies simultaneously, Ill take Earth, for armor, Fire Islands will definately be Water magic . Monk, I always take good heal and divine favor, usually 7-9(lvl 16 now). smiting for undead in Kryta, if facing casters like bog skales, margoyles, or fire imps, Ill take domination skills(Mo/Me). For me, it depends on what Im facing, so I guess Im with a 1-2 purpose build.

In my opinion if you want to go jack of all trades you need to find skills that do double duty in different roles. Lightning Reflexes is an example of such a skill which can be used in two ways.

The problem with jack-of-all-trades builds is that they're a master of none and when you come up against an opponent who is a master at what they do, you will lose. You generally need to go into a fight ready to win and then some; a half-hearted offense/defense, even against several types of opponents, generally won't cut it.

The thing to keep in mind is that in GW, you will never be able to defeat every possible enemy you might come across. Even the "jacks" out there won't be able to. It's better to make a build that excels at 1-2 specific roles, because that way you can count on success in those roles. If you try to be mediocre at everything, you probably won't be able to defeat anyone who knows what they're doing.

Self sufficiency is good, but not when it comes at the cost of effectiveness. Even in a disorganized team, you are better off doing one job and doing it well because your contribution in one area may shift the battle in your team's favor and they may be able to compensate for what you lack. If you can't do anything particularly well, then you essentially contribute nothing to your team and just take up space.

Are talking about PvP? If so, I dont know jack about it, all I know/care about is PvE. @OP "Wouldve helped alot if you tell us In PvE/PvP, which type of build do you prefer?"

In PvE, just about anything works so it's mostly an irrelevant point there. You can get through most of the game using only henchies and a wand.

In PvP, strategy does matter. Hence this discussion is, by its very nature, geared toward PvP.
