As a beginner, don't bother attempting to play as a MM until you're gained enough levels and the requisite skills to play that role.

When I roll up a Necro, I play mainly blood based skills until I've gained enough energy and health - as well as the skills - to play a MM. At that time, I'll switch. Usually about level 12-14 or so.

Before then it's not a very practical build, IMO.

I would suggest not useing minions untill you get all the skills go blood or curses instead there are to many MM in the game anyway.

Don't try to be a MM until lv. 20 and have all your attribute points. Period. You just won't have the proper attributes.

Blood works crazy effective until then.

Way to many MM's in the game, and I think it's spawning a whole generation of players that never need to know how to play really.

Made a balanced groups in Tombs the other day, got a couple of tanks. One tank says:

One Tuff Tank: Get a MM.
Me: Nah, you're tuff.
One Tuff Tank: *gulp*

I'm seeing that over and over, and sure I guess if you just wanna get a quest or anything done quickly, you can find a good MM and that'll help ease the pressure on the party while providing some offense once you get him going. But sometimes I just like to have a bare-knuckle brawl face to face with the baddies, and those minions make me feel like I'm just getting a free ride.

Don't get me wrong, I like Necros. My first character was one and I still have him. Played him as a MM yesterday in Tombs in a b/p group, just not nearly as fun to me as a balanced group in the same place.

Erm...for most missions, MMs are used for their very, very high DPS, not their tanking.

The way I started as an MM in Canthas was:

Animate Bone Fiend
Blood of the Master
Vampiric Gaze
Life Siphon

I can't remember the rest of my spells.

Death Magic: as much as possible
Soul Reaping: as much as possible
Blood Magic: Rest

Basically, DM, then SR, the BM. Don't cast BotM until you fight. During fights, cast BotM, and then VG. You will gain life as you sac from BotM. Always watch your energy, don't cast BotM unless you know you have energy & health to do so.

It is better to try your hand a MMing now, then to wait until you have all of the skills and attribute points. By then people expect you do be good at MMing, but if you wait, then you may end up not playing it very well. MMing, like other builds, takes time to master and knowing when to cast BotM and when not to. I hate seeing level 20 necros with a MM build spaming BotM until they have 10 life left. Healing minions too much will not help you if you are dead or almost dead (can be killed by a trap, if you walk near one).

Minions can help you survive (act as a buffer between you and the exploding afflicted).

Good luck and have fun.

I've never played a primary necro... and I've always wondered, do MMs use curses like Barbs or Mark of Pain to up thier damage?

I know some do. They use Barbs or Mark of Pain, or Tainted Flesh.

I think its better that 2 necros, 1 MM, the other curse & blood. They work well together.
