You basically train a pet to Dire by letting it do all the damage while it does not get hurt. Set yourself up defensively, with a shield & melee weapon that you do not meet req for, and bring pet attacks and protection. Then aggro some Mino's outside Ice Tooth Cave, let them attack you, and your pet attack them, and stay alive - when you die, so will your pet.

With a ranger primary you have expertise to reduce the energy cost.
But you shouldn't need Comfort at all during training - some training builds are without it - since you're supposed to get the aggro on your own character. Your pet should remain unharmed that way. The training build should reflect this, bring damage reducing measures, such as Call of Protection and Symbiotic Bond for your phoenix and stances like Whirling Defenses for yourself. And off course pet-attacks like Predators Pounce or Enraged Lunge.

It shouldn't get hit during training, or as little as possible. And when you need to heal your pet, once it has been trained, Comfort Animal is likely a better heal then any monk-skill you use as a secondary monk. Besides all that, you need it for pet-rezzing, that's the thing that really locks you into Comfort Animal.

Yes, I think so, but mostly your pet should be the one that does the damage, during training.

There you go. ALL of your issues with wondering whether a pet is cool enough, or how to train a pet will be solved by capping the dang Moa!

No. ALL the pets are exactly the same. (only the bear is the 'worst' pet)
The difference is your prefered 'evolution'. Dire deals a bit more damage, and has less hit points. Hearty deals less damage but has more hit points. Elder/Unevolved is the middle of the roader. More hits than a Dire pet, more damage than a hearty pet.
If you want to invest time, and effort into optimizing your pet, then no, I would not suggest the Black Moa. If on the other hand you want the coolest/level 20 with the least amount of effort in the shortest amount of time... then I'd get the Moa.

How can you tell if your pet is dire or hearty etc? I named him before he got the prefix.
I have the Melandru's Stalker from pre-searing, got him the first night I got Guild Wars, and I don't think I'll ever change.

The Black Widow can be found in all 3 forms: Hearty, Dire, and Elder. As far as I've seen, it's random as to which evolution it takes when it spawns.
