Playfull is an intermediate evolution, usually a Playfull pet becomes Hearty, Aggressive is the intermediate to evolving towards dire. A pet evolves to Agressive and then Dire when it does loads of damage and takes little hurt, or Playfull and then Hearty when it takes damage but deals little.
Elder is difficult to achieve, as you have to switch from an agressive to a playfull/heary training style, or from playfull to agressive/dire.

There is a guide on this site that details all this.

In the vast majority of cases Dire is going to be your best bet. If you need your pet to die faster (those who just use its corpse), then the lower HP is nice. If you want to focus on your pet and pet skills, then the Dire is also nice because it deals the most damage. The problem with Hearty is that the extra health really doesn't help the pet stay alive any longer if you're focusing on your pet. In those cases, what's important is what skills you take and how you use them rather that which evolution your pet is.

Elder is the middle of the road pet, and as such it gets relegated to completely useless in my mind. If you need something, you usually want to go all out, and the luke-warm state of the Elder just doesn't cut it.

to jenosavel: with pet's getting dp now, I think it's far better to go the hearty route. Nothing worse than having your pets get wand spiked when they hit 60 dp.

Hearty Bear! Go for a hearty bear. It's what I use and it owns. He attacks slower than the other pets, bodyblocks you like it's his job, and tends to ruin pretty much every screenshot you ever want to take. I can't get enough of it.
