Team based combat does not equal 1v1.

For my 1v1 Warrior I used
Deadly Riposte
Riposte
Life Transfer
Life Siphon
Strip Enchantment
Vampiric Gaze
Bonetti's Defense
For Great Justice
with 12 points in blood magic, enough points to use your sword, and rest in tactics
Start off with Life Siphon and Life Transfer to give yourself +10 and your enemy -10 life regeneration. For great justice will help you charge your adrenaline you need for bonetti's and riposte. If you need emergancy life, do a quick vampiric gaze; costs only 5 mana and steals 52 life from your enemy.
With the Ripostes and Bonetti's, everytime the enemy warrior tried to attack, he paid for it. If you're fighting against a war/mo, strip his enchantment and its gg.

Wild Blow, Auspicous Parry, Riposte/Deadly Riposte are all good in war duels. Be sure to have a wand to hit with as well, on the offchance the other guy is also packing ripostes. Charge adrenaline with wands, riposte with the sword.
Blood magic on a war FTL. Unless you know the opponent is packing 55hp and prot spirit. Hehe.

And they didn't twig?
I had an experience like that too, except with guild members who wanted to get into PvP but couldn't even grasp the simplest PvP concepts.
1v1 was seen as a good test of builds and abilities by these individuals.
They were incredibly serious about getting GvG going, something I'd never been keen on, but was willing to have the guild do, as long as they didn't expect active participation from me.
So I thought that I'd at least test the waters to see if there was some potential there.
It was soooo much fun taking them on with my mesmer.
Eventually, one showed some initiative and started playing around with stuff like Hex Breaker, but it took them far too long to adapt. And I mean that it took them WEEKS.
The majority left the guild a while back, but as far as I'm aware, most of them still get their builds from cookie cutter templates being unable to think up even the simplest build on their own.
The guild's GvG record during that brief period in time was utterly hilarious.
9 losses in 9 matches are still recorded in the guild status tab to this day.
I think that's all the evidence I ever needed that they couldn't think for themselves, and that all the 1v1ing in the world can't help team play.

if you can kill 10 level 24 enemies, you should be able to kill 1 level 20.

He knows, but just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
