I came up with a bizarre concept today, just wondering if this has been attempted before and how well/poorly it works...

Chillflames

Incendiary Arrows
Steam
Conjure Frost
Frozen Burst
Storm's Embrace
Troll Ungent
Comfort Animal
Charm Animal

You've got degen from the Arrows, interupt from the Arrows, damage boost from Frost & Steam, self-defense in the from of Burst + Embrace (freeze everyone nearby, back out, cast SE and book it), self-heal from the ubiquious Troll Ungent, and Comfort & Charm for the sake of having some ablative Health.

While it looks good in theory, the whole build suffers from the same flaw that Incendary Arrows itself suffers in that the effectiveness cannot be held constant enough to make it worthwhile. Since Expertise doesn't affect spells, energy management would be a really big issue here. Also, attributes would be very spread and take away from the efficiency of the build itself.

You really don't need a pet. That's a common mistake with newer rangers. Yes, pets can do high damage, but that would mean you're wasting two skill slots just to equip/heal it, and attribute points for it to actually do decent damage.

change incendiary arrow for burning arrows, throw frozen burst (consumes almost 1/2 of your energy), comfort and charm away, try using natural stride or whirling to get away or defend yourself, throw in apply poison and interrupt...

so something like this

burning arrow
savage/distracting (dist if you get have problems with energy)
steam
apply
running/defence skill
troll unguent
conjure frost
res

attributes should be something like this...

water magic: 5
expertise: 13
marksmanship: 12
WS: 10

i go test it and come back edit if i find it effective

wasn't that bad... but wasn't that great neither, energy stayed on 20/35, it dealt nice dmg and blind caused by steam helped prety much. works well at RA

That makes sense... I initially had Armour of Mist of all things, till I realized how very bad it was - Ranger run skills top it significantly.

I also had Savage Shot in there... I wasn't sure about dropping it but the combo with Steam looked too fun.

Lastly, I don't get much pet damage normally, I just like the idea of some extra HP to take the heat off... when I finally settle on a build, I think that Russ will have to go.
