Monk weapon sets
Currently I'm using:
Weapon set 1
+5 energy sword of Defense
+5 armor/+45 HP w/enchanted offhand
Weapon set 2
+5 energy sword of defense
+15 energy/-1 energy regen offhand
Weapon set 3
-5 energy axe of defense
-5 energy fan
Couple of questions:
1.) Should I switch my defensive mods for Fortitude ones? I generally use Sheperd (+hp) armor, but I have armor sets to switch in and out. (vs. physical and w/enchant)
2.) While it works well in a Boon Prot build, the offhand for weapon set one does nothing when I run a BL build. What should I switch it for when I run something without enchants?
3.) Should I get a +15 energy/-1 regen WAND for weapon set two?
Beyond that, I'd really appreciate any advice you have to offer. I really enjoy running a monk, and while I'm a casual PvP'er at best, I'm looking to improve. I'm aware this is a PvP slanted topic, but I don't want to clutter the PvP forums with something so basic. But JR did say that the topic of Monk weapon sets would be a thread of it's own..

Weapon Set 1:
I'd switch the Defense to a Fortitude if you mainly GvG, if not I'd leave it how it is. If you want versatility, I'd go with a +5e//Fortitude and a Charr At The Gate quest reward sword(+5 al while enchanted) with a Defense mod.
I would consider running an offhand with +30 health always, since in most cases you'll be drained/shattered durring a spike, which in effect gives them 45 more damage. Changing this also helps you if you're running somthing with no enchantments. I'd reccomend somthing like Byzzyr's Benediction(green), or a Straw Effigy(green). Although you'll want multiple Straw Effigys if you decide to go that route, since having one with 20% HSR for prot won't help much on a BL build.
Weapon Set 2:
Consider dropping the Defense mod for a Fortitude mod if you mainly GvG. Although, if you want versatility you could just get another +5e sword and tack on a Fortitude mod. I suggest you also get a +15e -1 regen wand for this set, and swap to that if you really need it, although I'd run the sword most of the time.
Weapon Set 3:
Consider a Fortitude mod if you mainly GvG. For versatility, consider both a Fortiude and a Defense.
And yes, JR is right, monk weapon sets could be an entire topic of their own, and a very large one at that.

Suggestions:
I would switch out, at least set 3, for the -5 energy katana with a fort mod (collector item) and the cities of ascalon scroll (-5 energy/+25 health/+5 armor) because chances are that you will have a warrior pounding on you and an e-denial mesmer rocking your energy
also for a booner I would add Gorbok's cane and the 20/20% jeweled chalice only for casting MoR or eDerain as set 4
for a BL Monk in set four, I would take the fiery flame splitter (with fort mod) and the divine favor straw effigy or a
and yes you should get the +15/-1 wand for set 2

chemmjr, a -5 axe is the same thing as a -5 sword. There's no reason for him to change weapon types... The Froezn/Forgotton fans are better than the CoA scroll, as they give 5 more health and have all the other properties. Oh, and if you have a Warrior constantly pressuring you, instead of spiking you, odds are a Defense mod would be the better option...
He probably already has Garbocks Cane and Garbock's Chalice, or the 20/20 Inspiration offhand.

Actually the fan hides 2 more energy than a shield, as long as you don't meet the attribute requirement. However, the shield has more armor and a damage reduction mod. I've debated which is better, and finally decided on the shield. Added defense will probably help you more than protecting an extra 2e, though the difference isn't big either way.

I always run with 4 sets, the first and last are always the same and the middle switch depending on what I'm running
1: Charr sword (+5+5 armor) / Max shield with +10 armor vs slashing (also have Geoffer's Bulwark for rangers)
2: +5 axe of fortitude / enchanting (depending on build) / Byzzr's Benidiction
3: +30/-2 regen collectors rod/offhand (type depends on build)
4: -5+30 axe with forgotten fan

If you don't meet the attribute requirement for a focus, it gives +3 energy. The green fans have a -5 energy mod, resulting in a net loss of 2 energy. A shield has no energy mod, positive or negative. Therefore, the fan hides 2 more energy than a shield.
