My Zhed does quite well when set up as E/Me "interruptive Searing Flames nuker" (from left to right):
Power Drain
Leech Signet
Fire Attunement
Searing Flames
Glowing Gaze
Liquid Flame
Immolate
Rez Sig
Fire on max, Energy Storage and Inspiration somewhat balanced. Sometimes you have to give him a lil' nudge with the Fire Attunement but all in all his mana is "not constantly empty", hihi (Glowing Gaze FTW!). Please note that I played a Searing Flames nuker myself the at same time, so the "two persons inflicting buring" might have helped him with his Glowing Gaze.

I would also add in could people say what setting they have them on? Aggressive, defensive, or passive?
I found that also has a difference in what they cast. My Zhed has never had an issue with dual attunes. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised how well he did it and it didn't matter what slot I had the attunes in. He pretty much cast them correctly. At that time I ran some high and low energy spells (flare and rodgort's invocation for two). He pretty much never ran out of energy, if he did we already had some other problems that were much more severe.
I've never really played him that much as aggressive, he would run really long distances to engage the enemy that it was irritating -defensive seemed the correct setting. I now run him as a searing flame/glowing gaze and he does a pretty good job at it. In the first slot I have glyph of lesser energy, second glowing gaze, third searing flames, and the next to last as fire attunement (I can not see a difference wherever I place fire attunement, the other three seem too matter - especially the glowing gaze and searing flames). He does pretty much the same thing as my Ele with a similar build so I'm happy. I throw in Glyph of elemental power and he handles it well, though it also seems he does the same with this wherever I place it.
The big wish I have is that he would see some skills as applying their conditions instead of damage. For instance I have him using steam with a decent water magic for blindness with searing flames. He spams steam too much, though at 5 energy it's not a big deal. Same thing with some of the water snares - he uses them as damage, not snares before nuking them. Without elemental attunement running two skill lines can eat up too much energy if he uses them both for damage. Since it is an elite I can not converge with searing flame for some nice conditions, though since my player controlled ele doesn't spam them she can keep her energy up..
Eh, the AI will never be perfect. Anet could spend the next 20 years perfecting it and come out with something that we will all find fault with. As is, I'm really liking this. It's amusing to take the hero builds (including new nightfall skills) through prophecies. The game (PvE) is soooo much easier

My ele hero uses Fire and Elemental Attunements. Sometimes I have to tell him to use them, but he still uses them.

The use of attunements and glyphs has never been an issue with my Eles(Olias is the perfect MM.I don't even need to watch him like I do the others).
However,Sousuke is addicted to MSing low lvl monsters,high lvl monsters, and anything that moves,so that skill is on restriction.Besides that,he does a good job.

I've got Elemental and Fire on Zhed and I've never had a problem with him not using them, mine however are in slots 7 and 8

Sousuke uses Attunements (and Aura, which I tend to run) more often than not, but I still need to keep an eye on him.
He's definitely using the Inspiration energy gainers.
Even so, he seems to run dry of energy more than I do without the Inspiration stuff (better an AI interrupting than me ...).
