Default Combating Misinformation and Bad PvE Monkery

Quote:
I posted this on another forum because there was a lot of garbage being passed around as good advice. Might be useful to someone.
This is not a comprehensive solution to bad PvE monkery, nor does it
conclusively destroy bad arguments and misinformation about particular
skills, but we have to start somewhere.

The 3 keys to successful monkery
  • Don't over-heal
  • Don't over-heal
  • Don't over-heal

General advice
  • Manage your energy
  • Many skills look bad on paper but shine in practice
  • You're never too (in)experienced to learn

Here are two builds which will not fail you in PvE, and justifications for
each skill used. A balanced team of 8 with one of each of these monks is
well-prepared for nearly all of PvE in Prophecies and Factions. Both
builds degenerate easily into a pre-elite, pre-lvl20, pre-200attribute
versions.

Healing Mo/Me
  • Word of Healing{E}/Healing Light{E}
  • Dwayna's Kiss
  • Orison of Healing
  • Healing Touch/Vigorous Spirit
  • Heal Party/Healing Seed
  • Mend Condition/Mend Ailment
  • Inspired Hex
  • Rebirth/Revealed Hex/Drain Enchantment/Channeling
    Healing 12 + 3 + 1 or 12 + 1 + 1
    Divine Favor 9 + 1
    Inspiration 9
    Protection 3 + 1

This is a reasonable healing backbone for any team.

Word Of Healing is one of the most efficient healing spells
available. Use it whenever you can, it's only 5 energy so you don't have
to wait until they're below 50%.

Healing Light essentially costs 2 energy for a decent heal when
combined with Vigorous Spirit or any other enchantment they may have put on
themselves.

Dwayna's Kiss can really shine while under lots of hexes or
enchantments, sometimes even out-healing Word of Healing.

Orison of Healing is reliable heal which you can use on yourself if
needed.

Healing Touch is just for yourself if you're worried about taking
damage. If you took Healing Light as your elite, take Vigorous Spirit
instead in order to take full advantage of it.

Vigorous Spirit offers only a small amount of healing power by
itself, but coupled with Dwayna's Kiss and Healing Light, it triggers
beneficial conditions for your healing power and energy management.

Heal Party is nice in condition-laden areas and Healing Seed
is especially useful for protecting the front-line. Do not over-use either
of these because they're costly and when misused provide little or no
benefit.

Mend Condition is usually more useful than Mend Ailment in
that Mend Condition heals when it pulls off a condition and has only a
2-second recharge, but you can't use it on yourself.

Inspired Hex is just as much for some free energy as it is to remove
a hex. It's not intended that you actually use the hex you pull off.

Rebirth is the resurrect of choice for PvE. But don't use it in
battle--you're more valuable if you are healing the party. As a monk you
should only res when battles are over, or when you've all run to safety and
can Rebirth into a safe position.

Revealed Hex is a copy of Inspired Hex.

Drain Enchantment nice energy management and can disable or weaken a
target.

Channeling is another excellent energy management skill, but be
careful not to put yourself too deeply into harm's way.

Utility Mo/Me
  • Blessed Light{E}
  • Gift of Health
  • Signet of Devotion
  • Reversal of Fortune
  • Guardian/Protective Spirit
  • Mend Condition/Mend Ailment
  • Inspired Hex
  • Rebirth/Revealed Hex/Drain Enchantment/Channeling
    Divine Favor 11 + 3 + 1 or 11 + 1 + 1
    Protection 8 + 1
    Healing 8 + 1
    Inspiration 9

This provides hex and condition removal, healing support and protective
damage prevention.

Blessed Light should only be used when someone is suffering from
both a hex and a condition, or are suffering from a hex or a condition and
need some healing. It's expensive, but you can get a lot of mileage out of
it by only using it when needed. You have skills for pulling off 1 hex or
1 condition that are cheaper.

Gift of Health is an amazing cheap heal. Feel free to use it
whenever you need to since there are no other healing skills in this build
to disrupt.

Signet of Devotion is another amazing heal, for free. It takes 2
seconds to cast so be mindful not to use it while under heavy fire.

Reversal of Fortune is very efficient when facing medium to high
damage enemies. Not very useful when taking lots of hits from small
damage.

Guardian is excellent defense against melee or ranged physical
attacks. In the above case when taking lots of hits from small damage,
this will likely cut that damage in half.

Protective Spirit is a lifesaver against the massive damage casters
of levels greater than 20 can cause. Or if your melee attackers have a
habit of using Frenzy while surrounded.

See above for comments on the rest of the skills.

Never under any conditions take these skills
  • Healing Breeze
  • Mending

Healing Breeze is entirely useless for day-to-day monkery. It costs
10 energy, and potentially heals for 180 over 10 seconds. It's an
enchantment which can be stripped or shattered. It is often said that
Healing Breeze should be used to combat health degeneration. But it's far
more efficient to remove the health degeneration due to conditions with
Mend Condition, Mend Ailment or even Restore Condition{E} than to simply
slow it down. If the degeneration is coming from hexes, then Inspired Hex
and Blessed Light{E} again provide far more utility. Vigorous Spirit is
cheaper, lasts longer, and provides a similar utility of healing over time.

Mending is worse because it provides an illusion of utility when in
fact it develops negative utility. +3 or +4 health regeneration isn't much
at all, 6 or 8 health per second at the cost of 1 energy degeneration.
Again, useless for day-to-day monkery.
