Post New Monk

I am a new monk, seeking advice .... i mainly started this profession because i had extra space, and this profession is in demand (gettning 5k offers to join parties are really nice as well =)). Anyways, I would really like to be a healing kind of guy... so, i have chosen a mesmer secondary... any hints on where to lean on to go the right direction?

It all depends on what format you play: pve, HA, GvG or AB.

Tips:

1) Do not waste healing. This means when an ally takes 3 damage, you don't go use Reversal of Fortune or Word of Healing on him. Infact, try to keep everyone who's taking damage below 100% health most of the time, so you never overheal them.

2) Bring energy management. Energy managment is godly, and there's no excuse to be without it, ever, even in PvE.

About not overhealing:

I can't remember who said it, but the best way to look think about health is that the only hit point that matters is the last one; the other 500+ are just a buffer to protect that last hit point. You should only heal a target if they are in danger of losing their last hit point. So if someone is at 80% health or whatnot, you shouldn't heal them unless your spell would bring them back to less than 100% health--otherwise, you would be wasting healing and, thus, energy.

The players you should be actively healing are the one's currently taking damage, because their "last hit point" is in the most danger. Other teammates may be hurt, but unless you think they are in danger of dying you don't need to heal them right away.

The only real exception is when you have 100% energy. With 4 pips of regen, you gain 1.33 energy per second. However, you can't gain energy past 100%. Therefore, it is reasonable to cast heals even if they overheal a little, since you would be essentially wasting energy otherwise. Just don't heal unnecessarily unless you have nearly 100% energy.

.. Don't favour anyone. Your job is to keep everyone alive, don't favour one person over another. That said, it is important that the MM doesn't die, and also remember to help the other monk if there is one. Some people think because you are a monk you can heal yourself, but in some situations (an Abyssal in FoW for example), you are very likely to die if you get attacked and need someone else to heal you while you kite. Also the healers best skills target "other" players, so can't be used on themselves.

Yes a Mo/W can heal, but you won't have the best energy management. You will probably only be able to run a straight heal build, and in a long battle might be low on energy. But Mo/W is fine until you reach the desert and can change secondary profession (presuming Prophecies).

You haven't answered whether you are in PvE, AB, RA etc.. so hard to give an example build.

The same as mo/e, mo/r, ect. It's mainly used for farming but its just about the skills you use. Mo/me is best for healing for the energy management options. Mo/w if you want to farm, other secondaries have their purpose but are usually not as well rounded. 6-7/8 of your skills will be from monk line.

re: mo/w

i would have in it some running skills for kiting and/or catching up to kiting team mates to heal them....

as regard to heal priorities:

monks (yourself and other healing/port monks)
MM
warrior

that is, IF everyone's doing their job properly... it is my believe that everyone else should be much lower on the priority list... why?!

monks is highest prioirty (with them entire team lasts longer)
MM (with minions of course) once they die, it's likely that the whole team will be annilated (as the minions turn masterless once MM dies, and attacks any one)
Warrior( because warrior act as shield for the whole party.... if shield breaks in 1 or 2 hits due to DP then party is likely to be slaughtered after that)

may i also refer to primitive worker's thread:

I have played very well wth my Mo/W no problem with energy get a little into melee rannge throw up bonetti's presto you have about 10 to 15 energy
more than channeling and for that you need to get close to.Mo/W are good for conditional and melee damage but not so good for degen as in hexes and such.
