Question Ranger/Monk. open for discussion and advice!

I have the game but cant play it yet because my computer broke down an i was wondering if ranger/monk was a good prof combo to start with?

I basicly want ranger because ive always loved to be an archer, also we get to have pets! W00t! I love to have pets cause they're really great!

And I will acompany it with monk because if my facts are right rangers dont have much defense and not so good armor.....and the healing will help me survive. Plus I can rez an help out friendlies.

If any of my upper facts are wrong plz correct me Im still noob an Im seeking advice.....either for a better combination or some other good perks that combo has that i dont know about....

Hope to hear from you guys and gals!

Lol, about right their bud. I'm a Ra/Mo.

It's good, but annoying having to think about "ooh, do I have this heal skill, or this one? and damn, If I have that, I can't have my pet out, or I can't have this Marksmenship skill" etc.

I'd give anything for a 9th skill slot.

1 rezurect skill
2 powerful bow attacks
1 **pet charm
1 pet heal/rezurect skill
1 tactical bow atk( cripling, bleeding, etc.)
1 trap (one with high dmg an cripling efect)

help me out if u got a better one.

Not bad... but if i remember correctly you can heal/rez pets with Monk spells as well... giving you anohter open slot for a preparation for example (Read the Wind or Tigers Fury)

ohhhh yea.....thats right!
well that leaves another open space for a skill.

still dont know wat im gona use it for, but probably tigers fury or a 'pet attack comnand' cuz my pets are gona be a 'must' in battle for me so might as well have a strong one!

thnx for the reminder!

i tried resing my pet yesterday but it didn't work =/ i could use orison of healing and other stuff on it though

i think it's because the description of res says "party member" while the others say "ally" or "other ally" and pets are listed as "ally" in the party window

I don't recommend bring comfort animal into a PvE or PvP. When the animal dies, the comfort animal will rez it and all your skills go off for sometime. I just bring charm animal to run the pet as a gimp, and if it dies, pick up your pet at the next mission.

I think i should use confort animal because i will not use my pet as a gimp, he will be a loyal companion by my side. And i want him to stay alive as long as possible an get as much xp as possible. if my pet dies in battle i will revive it, wait for my skills to be useable again, and keep fighting. Ill love my pet like a brother....if it dies, im gona feel sorry for the creature who killed it because its gona get an arrow through the neck! lol

A Ranger/Monk for PvE

Each missions requires different skills. Try keep you Ressurection with you, it always comes in handy. This is for the first 5-10 missions.

1. If you go through swamp areas and encounter Rangers / Mesmers etc - Bring
a) Healing Breeze
b) Troll Unguent
c) Drop your Pet - it can't take the Degen

2. If you go through areas with clusters of Mobs with Melee, Like Chars / Ettins -etc
Bring
a) Shielding Hands
b) Ignite Arrows
c) Power attack
d) Penetratig attack
e) Pet
f) Comfort Animal

This is just an example. Bring skills that fit the particular mission.

Its important to think about your end-character what do you want your stats to look like at level 20? you only have so many points/runes/hats so it requires thoughts. As for rangers i've heared that you have(like really have) to pump up expertiese. this brings down the cost of all your bow attacks. if you do this(10 exp. 10 marksmanship) you only have about 10 to load into your third pick. you could try to go with 4 but that would weaken your character. Decide what you want and build to it. I'm a MesMo but I only Mo for the res. In a serious fight or PvP your going to have to be a commited monk(well depending on your team) so keep in mind how your going to play. Oh well enough from me.

yea, ive been thinking of that an this is wat my attributes are gona look like for my ranger/monk:

10 marksmanship
9 expertise
9 beast mastery
8 healing prayers

-marksmanship is lvl 10 cause i wana be a high dmg archer.
-expertise at lvl 9 to have low cost at skills( high dmg is more important to me than low cost).
-beast mastery at 9 because i wana have a really good beast that can help me fight an will actually stand a chance.
-healing prayers for lvl 8 cuz theyre my least priority( healing will only be used in case of low health.....im not gona be healing on a routine basic.....just for emergencies if u will.)

help me out with other coments or advices.

I don't know how you feel about pvp, but pets are notorious in every game for being pretty useless since they are ignored in favor of concentrated strikes on single human targets by good pvp groups. Now, since this is the case, there's a chance that your pet might do enough damage to wreck some havoc, but from the rangers I've faced as a war/mes, their pets are way too weak to worry about as I usually chew their master apart and get rid of both enemies at once.

So, make sure to keep your defense high enough to let your pet do some damage. But still don't leave yourself weakened by buffing your pet. It's a tough tightrope to walk but hopefuly you'll be able to pull it off.

My ranger/monk is currently running around post-sear Ascalon with this setup:

Power Shot
Penetrating Shot
Bane Signet (Not really needed, it's usefel "free" damage, but when I think of something better, this will go)
Ressurect (I play mostly with henchmen, and they tend to die, lol, but the idea is that while I'm not really going to be equipped to play a healer, I can run away, or finish the fight, and then res my party)
Charm Animal (Just for the fun of it, really)
Orison of Healing (Would heal area be better? I mainly use in on myself if I don't trust my monk)
Mending (I keep this on myself while exploring, I have a +5 energy bow and that seems to balance out the slower energy regen fairly well)
Comfort Animal (For ressing my pet mostly, tho like said, it could be done without)

This setup works very well for me, as long as I'm careful not to engage too many monsters at once. Five( at slightly lower levels) than me is what I feel I can safely take down, but it depends alot on the type of enemy as well. I have trouble with the burrowing bugs (devourers?).

EDITED TO ADD: I intend to only play PvE. And I can't remember my skill points, but I'm aiming to end out with Healing Prayers, Marksmanship and Expertise at 9/10 and giving what's left to Beast Mastery.

You mean ranger/monk right?

Btw I'm also a Ranger/monk. Ranger because their cool and monk because I don't like to rely on people to heal or rez me and also i like to explore by myself most of the time.

My skills are pretty balanced until i get better ranger skills :

Charm
ignite
dual shot
troll

heal area
healing breeze
rez
orison

Im mostly gona be PvE. thats why i take pride in my pet skills, plus i love pets!

my main reason for picking ranger/monk was this:

ranger cause they use bows ( ive always loved to use bows in all the games, for example: in Fable my char was maxed in accuracy, 'master archer'...., etc)
also....THEY HAVE PETS! an i love pets, lol

i also picked monk because i dont like to quest with my friends, i like to do it alone. And if i do go with some friends i can heal them an keep them alive....and mainly keep myself alive.

any advice or topic ud like to post here about ranger/monk profesions,
"my thread is your thread!"
