i have just made a r/w build as well.
i was thinking about using the apply poison preparation and sever artery sword attack to induce poison and bleeding for lots of health degeneration.
dunno as of yet i havent gotten far enough to try anything.
maybe you can build off that....
cheers and luck to ya.

youre going to want to have a purpose for your build, like say interupting build or tanking build. In general a sword r/w would use apply poison and sever artery, or some other bleeding inducing skill. Some other skills i suggest are savage slash and hamstring. Also, you will want to have troll unguent for healing, when a monk is not available to heal you, and some evasion to stop your ass from getting beat. And in general, people like to have tiger's fury for an inconsequensial speed boost. Just look throughout the boards and you find some builds that people have made.

well, what ever skills you use according to their importance. I think you could live with a little less wilderness survival, and i dont even use more than 4 beast mastery normally. Id put a good amount into swordsmanship, but dont put too much, you still need expertise to lower those skills costs, and make your exp skills better, if you have any.

cool, i'll give that a try. But the thing is I still wanna use my bow, Almost as much as the sword. Would it still be effective to split the char between bow and sword (halving the att. points between sword and marks.) or would that make me average in both?

I'd say it would make you below average in both, expecially if you take skills for both Bow and Sword on the same skill bar. You'd have points in Tactics, Swordsmanshilp, Marksmanship, and probably Exptertice and Wilderness Survival as well. That wouldn't work too well, IMO.
I'd just concentrate on the Sword, and use a Bow to pull with. Draw them in with the Bow, pull out the Sword for the beat-down. If you MUST use both with effect, take Apply Poison. Poison at range, then move in for the kill.
As far as builds go, I've got a R/W build posted up here somewhere. The build I finally settled with is pretty decent, nothing great, but can be expanded upon.

If you want to melee with a ranger in PvE, you need stances. Its just not a good idea, you need them to keep alive.
Even then, I would suggest you play as a bow ranger untill you can get Escape, Shield Stance, and Whirling Defense. All you need is those 3 stances to stay in 75% evade 100% of the time.
When I use a sword to melee on my ranger, my build is something like this
Sever
Gash
Distracting Blow/Savage Slash/Some other attack
Apply Posion
Troll's Urgent
Escape
Shield Stance
Whirling Defense
That being said, Axes might be better, for Cyclone Axe.

You dont need to be in a stance 100% of the time. If you can deal with anyone attacking you, assuming you arent being attacked by more than 2 people, then you dont need that much evasion. I find that I can deal with any melee attackers that are attacking me easily while only using 1 evasion. And you need a lot more expertise, and a lot less wilderness survival. Id say like closer to 11 or more exp, if you can manage, and closer to 8-10 wilderness survival (only the even numbers make changes for troll unguent). If you know you wont have a monk to rely on, then you might need the extra points in ws for troll unguent, but otherwise, Id go with higher expertise.
My basic melee build looks like:
* Mastery:12
Beast Mastery:3+1
Expertise:9+1+1
Wilderness Survival:9+1
Apply Poison
*
*
*
Tiger's Fury
Whirling Defence
Troll Unguent
Rez Signet / *
*-attack skill for corresponding weapon
I like it a lot, a jack of all trades.... almost.... not really. Still kicks some serious ass though.

mmm, when he said he was lvl 12, I assumed he was looking for a PvE build.

That certainly is a good build for PvP.
