mesmer ele used to be good in pve but since the farming patch mesmers almost have no use in pve anymore. they can barley solo lvl 8 charr with an arsenal of non elite skills.
pvp a mesmer ele for damage with fast casting and ele attunements (i submitted this) or a necro mesmer for degen (which i also made/submitted). mesmer necros CANNOT degen as good as necro mesmers, trust me.
dont do mesmers pve they suck.

The problem with PvE mesmers is that its hard to figure out exactly what to do with them. The best use of a mesmer is energy denial and spell interruption, but neither of those are desperately important in a PvE setting. This means, you may have to look toward your secondary to suppliment your effectiveness... Me/E isn't a terrible choice for PvE, I suppose, since you can fastcast some of those terribly slow elementalist spells, and supplement your energy better than the average ele. Me/W is popular--use illusionary weaponary and stances and fight, with some added hexing power. There are a lot of good cursing builds that use Me/N for both PvP and PvE.
In terms of PvP, mesmer is king. Your job is to lay waste to enemy spellcasters; often several at once. Look at interrupt builds, hexing builds, energy denial, whatever you want really. I like Me/E for PvP, if only for the 5 points I throw into air magic so I can use gale to interrupt non-spell skills. You will most likely be having so much trouble trying to sort through all of the great mesmer skills available to you, that it is unlikely you will take more than 1 skill from your secondary.
Don't run the Me/E spamway builds. They're good for a laugh, but are honestly basically worthless unless there's like 6 of you all doing it at once. It's a complete waste of your mesmerizing ability.

I like playing as my mesmer in PvE, but it's true you normally have to play to your secondary.
Or you can play smart with your primary: I did this for a long while.
I personally like the necro secondary for say, soul barbs, or price of failure. (Spirit of Failure, Price of Failure, Empathy, SS)
But, as a mesmer, you're normally not goign to be spiking or attack the enemies that the rest of the party is, you'll be wreaking havok on all the other people.
Basically, mesmers are fun, but often underrated and overlooked in PvE.

lol. Whoever said that Mesmers are useless for PvE, im sorry but u have no idea what you are talking about.
I can solo UW with a modified Me/mo, and its even faster and better, call me noob but my Me/Ele can farm most of the desert with no problem, and i can always switch to PvP because teh green items are just....unbelivebly awesome. Im the guilds mesmer and i love it, Mesmer i have to say its my favorite especially PvE.
PS: pm ingame and ill tell u some nice PvE builds.

I've been told that I made thunderhead 5x easier with my mesmer. A mesmer can be played many ways, you just have to find your niche. This really is the best advice anybody can give you.

Mesmer is by far the funnest class in the game. PvE or PvP. The great equalizer for the mesmer profession is skill cost. But that can always be worked around. Mesmer is not a class for everyone. 99% of the time, you will not be focused on one target.
James-
*Edit* Oh, and if your serious about playing mesmer, only glyphs or hard rez are the only skills worth using on a secondary profession. That is my opinion though.

Well, I've always hated mesmers, but then again, my favorite class is Elementalist so that might have a lot to do with it. I've come to respect mesmers a lot and I usually use N/Me for degen and I dont really see why it wont work Me/N. One of my friends from my old guild, uses his Me/N has a minion factory and at lvl 20 he has almost 10 minions out at the same time constantly.
Anyways, any class can work, dont let anyone tell you a certain class sucks for either PvP or PvE, you can always make it work.

well in pve... use domination/healing me/mo
in pvp.. there are a lot of builds
personally i love the entire Inspiration line, but here is a good build
Illusion 16, 10 insp, 4 domination, rest in Fast casting [optional Death Magic for corpse control]
Mesmer Necro
Conjure Phantasm
Migrane {E}
Power Spike
Power Leak
Leech Signet
Power Drain
{other} can be Consume Corpse, Soothing Images, Inspired Hex, Phantom Pain, channeling, so many choices
and of course a Rez sig
you are basicly a degen interrupter, if you are using Phantom pain... my favorite other spell... you will be dealing -10 health, and 0n a monk,... you will interrupt the next 4 spells, and be pretty much shuttin them down.
this is usually a team mate who is working off the primary target, and stopping 1 monk, or caster from doing what they are doing
takes some practice, just make sure you can see their skill charge bar well, and be quick on the trigger

To the Euroboy: solo-farming is not a mark of PvE ability, it is a mark of solo-farming. A mesmer is a great solo-mesmer but SOL in a team because it isn't designed to operate in a team. Same with my solo ranger and my solo monk. I play a mesmer and it is probably the most difficult character to play in PvE because it is a reactionary class. If you want to be an effective mesmer (or a mesmer at all) you have to stop rating yourself by how many kills you can get and how much damage you can do. Instead discover the pure joy of rendering other player or monster completely useless. While your team worries about dealing the most damage, you can find the caster which is creating problems and leave them sucking his/her thumb until your team gets around to killing him/her. Infact, you can run around and leave a whole bunch of monsters scatching their heads, beating themselves up, or healing themselves to death. True, no one on your team will likely notice you or the fact that the monsters are all stupified but a mesmer is the joy of being a jerk, not a killer.

Mesmers are like poeple who do behind-the-scenes work. A lot of times people don't understand what you do, but the ones who know will love you ^_^

Congratulations, I believe you have summed up the joy and challenges of playing a mesmer in PvE. I find the mesmer most enjoyable to play because you have to think about the skills you whack onto your skills bar and when to use them. Fast energy management, watching the enemy's health to see if Empathy is wortt casting on them when they have only 25% health left...etc Other characters can mostly get by but often a wrongly chosen mesmer skill can be completely useless depending on where you are in Tyria. (This is probably going to cause all the other classes to argue but it is my opinion, get over it )
New players have to get past the idea of constantly hitting an enemy with large amounts of damage and start thinking about disabling the enemy with health/energy degen and other hexes. I beleive necros are also good at this , but I haven't played one yet so I am not acquainted with their skill set.
I chose Ranger for my secondary proffession when I started (I just wanted a pet) and so far I haven't utilised it that much. I don't have enough spirits and traps yet which I may find useful later on. 90% of the time I have 6 mesmer skills res sig and troll ungent.

Maybe you should ditch Troll Ungent for Ether Feast :P Just an idea for letting you put more points into primary skills ^_^

None of my mesmer builds have self-healing, in PvE you shouldn't be taking much damage (no, you are not a tank. Really.) and in PvP there are monks
I really like alot of the simple skills for high-end PvE, empathy and backfire in particular. In any case, you want to cause as much chaos on monster ranks as possible. Having, say, 2 anti-war, 2 anti-cast skills (ineptitude, empathy, conundrum, and backfire are my favorites) and you can essentially reduce the functioning efficiency of 4 enemies. Back that up with interrupts to help keep the team safe from huge slow nukes, hex/enchant removal for support, and the Mesmer is actually a quite nice PvE machine.
And for PvP... so much you can do to screw up enemy casters until they run away from you. Too much to list.
