Red face Thinking about Switching from N/E to E/N, Mainly for PvE for Now

PvE Toon for Now

I don't really care for minions, and as soul reaping seems pretty weak (being near dying enemies is a good way to die, yourself, as a Necro, I've noticed), I'm seriously considering dumping my lvl 18 N/E and starting over with an E/N. It just seems that I would be able to enjoy the same skills but with more mana to work with. Additionally, if I could carefully select my corpses to make energy/health wells I'd live a lot longer, and with more mana I feel like I'd have more freedom to be selective. I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

Any feedback appreciated in advance.

BTW, this would be my 5th time going through the grind (N/E, Wo/M, Mo/W, Me/R), so I can do it pretty quickly and isn't a problem. Just don't want to totally waste my time.

Soul reapings not that bad. I never really had a problem with the range on it. You seem like you're leaning on changing, so go for it. You could always try them both out pvp style first.

Heh just really cranked up the soul reaping to test it, and the range and energy restoration is pretty good actually. Still, I wonder if the energy levels would tend to stay higher with an Ele, since if you are going after a tough single mob or aren't getting corpses, there's no mana.

I'd try the PvP thing, but all my slots are full.

One thing about a primary elementalist I like is the fact that you can have energy storage so basically I can be most other professions to a certain degree with more energy than normal. Kind of a jack of all trades but master of none.

What's the default energy regen for an Ele? For Necro it's 4.

Also, what is the Southern Shiverpeaks' armor like for Eles? Ie level of armor, energy regen, etc?

It's 4 for all casters.

Energy storage has skills tied to it. Soul reaping does not.

In my (admittedly limited) experience Energy storage would be better for shorter fights/fights against lower numbers, and most important to an elementalist, MUCH better at dealing with exhaustion... Soul reaping better for longer fights/lots of mobs/minions. .

Unless you have the elemental attunement and attunement for your specific line up, which you can keep up about 75% of the time in which you get 80% of the energy spent back on lets say fire spells, if you're a pyro. elemental attunement lasts 45 sec with 60 sec recharge and fire attunement lasts up to 55, higher with runes i think, with 60 sec recharge as well. Although elemental attunement is an elite, but these two enchantments can stretch that 80 or so energy pool quite a ways.

and do not forget the runes. necro curses and blood spells are exponentially better at 13-16 so i would stick with your necro primary

I play a Necro/Mesmer, and it easily solo's Mahgo Hydras, Sand Drakes, and a bunch of other fairly tough cookies.

Keep your Necro/elementalist -- there's no point in wasting all that hard XP earned. Once you get the elite Life Transfer, soloing big single targets becomes much easier. Offering of Blood will also deepen your energy pool quite a bit.

Crap still can't decide. I just really hate running out of mana if nothing is dead. A necro with no mana is in big doo-doo.

I feel your pain...I am also a N/E. But I have learned a strategy for energy management:

Set your Soul reaping to 8-10 and get the elite spell "Offering of Blood". At Blood=18, it gives you 22 energy for a 10% sacrifice, which is nothing. It also has a short 15 second recharge time. This is quite possibly the best spell in the game.

Now, when you have OoB, use it often. Do NOT wait until you are empty. Use it as soon as you are down 22 energy. When it recharges, use it. The goal isn't to replentish your energy. The goal is to DELAY energy depletion until Soul Reaping kicks in.

I guess OoB would be better than WoP, which I figured I would be using for mana restoration.

Guess I may as well stick with necro. THanks everyone for your input.
